Children need an outlet to discuss worries and stressors just like adults do, but need to do this in a way that makes sense to them. Therapy can include art and play in order to allow a child to express their feelings, sometimes when there are no words to do so. Parents benefit from a better understanding of their child, and many times are integral to the counseling process.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall... Guess what? We can help to heal those hurts and and get your child stronger and more resilient for other bumps in the road. Through play, which is the natural way children experience the world, we use a combination of Behavioral, Cognitive and Play Therapy, depending on the child's age. In a safe and comfortable environment your child will be able to express his/her feelings, learn how to cope with stress and be able to make changes which will make him/her more successful. We don't want the children to carry into adulthood the baggage that can hinder their progress, so we can also work with parents to be more confident and effective with their little Humpty's.

Working with chldren in therapy requires special training in techniques that help the child express their emotions in ways other then verbally. Many children are unable to vebally express feelings and may act out their hurt by being aggressive or by withdrawal. Play Therapy helps the child learn about and express feelings through nonverbal modalities of toys, sand and art. The child is allowed to PLAY out his hurt and anger with the therapist providing the child with reflective emotional words about his/her play. The focus of this type of therapy is to provide a safe place for the child to emote and eliminate the internalization of emotions that lead to depression and anxiety.

It is far easier to help a young child adjust and cope to the world, than to try to fix a broken adult who has been suffer for a long time in silence. I think it's a blessing when a child is willing to open up, talk, learn, and modify behavior to live the life of his/her fullest potential. I usually like to incorporate some family therapy in working with young children. It does no good to heal and child, only to send them back into a home that is not healthy. The entire family deserve the chance to heal and grow.
