I work with parents together and individually to help them understand family structure and dynamics and to make healthy changes in parenting techniques, such as setting boundaries, practicing consistency, using choices and consequences appropriately, and practicing loving detachment. I observe parents and children together and teach effective communication skills. I use art and play therapy with children to encourage emotional expression and processing and to practice relationship skills in the clinical setting. Neuro-Integration and Emotional Freedom Technique support emotional integration, regulation, and coping.

Young children experience the world in ways that are vastly different from adults, which also means that they process loss, stress, and trauma differently from the ways you and I might do so. Young children also live in a world that is vastly different from the one most adults lived in as children. Counseling children well takes both of these truths into account. Your child will benefit from a counselor with a natural inclination to understand and enjoy kids and who can also appreciate their unique physical, mental, and emotional developmental needs. I place a high priority on play therapy and parental collaboration, two integral pieces to effective therapeutic work with children

The practice of therapy to help children succeed is a collaboration between the parentsand the therapist. I can help you to help your child, and you can help me to help your child. The first appointment is usually just with the parent(s) or other guardian(s) so we can discuss your concerns and issues appropriate for adult discussion. The second session is generally with both the child and parents. The following sessions I might meet just with your child for a time or two. By the third or fourth appointment you and your child should feel comfortable and optimistic about therapy. At this point we will have decided on your goals and have a plan for services.
