At this point in my professional life as a psychologist I no longer directly work with young children. However, I do work with the children's parents in order to assist them in meeting the multiple challenges which can be present in a marriage, which in turn can have an effect, not only on the emotional well-being of the children, but on themselves as well.

I work with children and adolescents ages 6-18. My approach is to let them participate in their therapy, so that they have a sense of control, and not that something is "being done to them." Every child is different, so my approach depends on their personality and behavior. With quiet, or defiant children, I may start by playing a board game or doing puzzles so we can get to know each other. With a more outgoing or verbal kid, they may have a lot to tell me and just want to talk. Still others respond to workbook exercises which I provide feedback on. Children experience many different stages of life but may not be able to express their feeling due to fear, not feeling comfortable, respect or not wanting to anger loved ones. Now I never told this child I loved her and I was working with her mother to increase structure in the home but she sensed this and responded to it. Her behavior improved after 3 sessions. I try to create a space which is welcoming and kid-friendly. Children communicate best through play and it's through play therapy that children's emotions are fully expressed.
