In our current over-scheduled, over-pressured world, families are confronting problems they have little capacity to do anything about. We can tend to cope by getting stuck in a narrow range of behaviors and responses even if they are not helpful. A child who has learned to have temper tantrums when she is angry, and her parents who have learned to punish or pamper her, are stuck in maladaptive, non-growthful environments—‘a bad play’. It’s like playing the same part in the same play on the same stage day after day. A key component in this play is often our children’s behavioral, emotional and leaning difficulties that are so disruptive or dysfunctional - all we want to do is stop it. As pare....

I love working with young children and their families. There is so much opportunity for change. Much of this change has a significant influence on their later lives. I believe the best way to help is through the parent-child relationship itself. Play and play therapy are important ways to help children grow and develop to the best of their abilities. One way that I help is through Filial Therapy in which parents learn how to conduct weekly play therapy sessions at home. These weekly home play sessions, improve the parent-child relationship, parenting skills, children's mastery of their feelings and actions and their self control and self-esteem.. As children feel better, they get better.

I specialise in working woth older adolescents. High school teens feel such pressure on them and find the choices they need to make, leave them feeling very overwhelmed and sometimes depressed. I help them find ways of coping that are appropriate for their world. I work with them on developing life skills that will enable them to feel more in control in their world. A relationship with an adult that is not their parent is so beneficial for them. They feel very heard by me and are able to explore any number of issues that they feel unable to with their parents.

Most of my work with young children takes place together with their parents. This way I can observe their interactions and take the pressure off the child to speak to a stranger (me!) in an unfamiliar setting. Parents sometimes worry about talking about their concerns in front of the child, but I encourage them to see it as an opportunity to talk with their child about their concerns. Most kids already know when their parents are worried about them, and it only makes it worse when they don’t know exactly what the concerns are. This approach also teaches kids that talking about difficult things need not be a bad experience, and reinforces their seeing parents as wanting to help.
