As the lyrics of a well-known song acknowledge, children often have no familial voice with regard to their welfare and well-being. They are, to a great extent, dependent upon their caregivers for their emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. At Chrysalis Connections, we recognize the special challenges children face and make every effort to honor and lift up the needs and wishes of our smallest clients. Giving our young clients a voice in the family process ensures a more complete family therapy experience and reduces the chance that these sometimes unheard voices will seek more definitive methods of being seen and heard.

Families play an important role in children’s healing processes. The interaction between children’s problems and their families is always complex. Sometimes children develop problems as a way of signaling that there is something wrong in the family. Other times the entire family becomes distressed because the child’s problems are so disruptive. In all cases, children and families heal faster when they work together. The play therapist will make some decisions about how and when to involve some or all members of the family in the play therapy.
