The teenage years can be tough for you and your child. Teens test limits, pull away and can feel misunderstood as they try to figure out who they are. Parents can feel frustrated, powerless and shut out. The trick for parents is to stay engaged, set limits but still allow your teen the room to take healthy risks.
The intensity of this stage can strain family ties no matter how good family relationships have been in the past. Therapy is a good place to look at identity, sexuality, drugs / alcohol use, disrespect, school problems and build skills to navigate these issues
Cliff Crain, MFT
I specialize in helping parents with young children. I started my career as an elementary school teacher and school counselor. Now, as a Marriage Family Therapist, I usually meet with the parents to discuss their concerns and possible interventions.
I have found too many therapists who will treat (work with) the children but not the parents. In many cases, this is unprofessional and a little like teaching children math skills on a sinking ship (with the family system being the ship). I support therapy for children when appropriate.
Call me, so we can explore your specific concerns. (9245-855-1745) Also, visit www.4creativeliving.com to sign up for the BEST PARENTING PRACTICES newsletter.

Depending on the age of your child, therapy incorporates play therapy, art therapy with talk therapy. I find that children usually enjoy coming to therapy and participate readily in the process. Young children learn about their world and process information through play, making play the best way for them to process difficult experiences and learn new skills for dealing with their challenges. Play therapy can involve the use of toys in a sand tray, puppets, drawing or painting, games etc. As children get older, more talk can be effectively incorporated into therapy. Depending on the issues involved, therapy often incorporates sessions with the parents or other family members.

WIth children, I use a play therapy technique. By observation of their play, it is possible to determine the issues that are of concern to children. Through play therapy, I help children resolve these issues. Play is a metaphore for the lives children are leading. With drawing, sandtray work, and other play therapy techniques, I slowly build a connection with children and help them get past any issues they are experiencing.

In my practice I work with young children with a variety of difficulties from controlling their anxiety, anger and tantrums, to getting along better with friends and siblings and parents. I also help them with school difficulties that include failing grades, and behavior issues. I work with the child, parent and often the teacher to remember what Erikkson taught that "behind each behavior is a feeling". My goal is to help the child access their feelings, and in a safe place, explore their feelings and behavior while learning tools to help contol them so they can live happy and fulfilled lives.

Matt Lindgren is a male child therapist who offers play therapy & conjoint family play therapy to help children with behavioral problems, child abuse, domestic violence, and foster care. Whenever possible, I attempt to have a parent/caregiver present during play therapy sessions, as an active participant. I find therapy is more effective if children can connect with the important people in their lives during a session as a way of healing. I'm one of a few Oakland therapists trained to use EMDR & Somatic Experiencing interventions with children in play therapy. I've adapted these techniques to use them in play, making play therapy much more powerful.

I have a specialty in children and adolescents, and often work with a co therapist for the best results which includes parents. When included, parents do 90 per cent of the changes that bring about the desire changes in behavior and attitudes being sought for a positive, self esteem. Helping parents become the best role models for their children brings about better home relationships and better academic results.

Children have not yet learned how to shield themselves from conflict, negativity, etc. Therefore, they are akin to "sponges," soaking up whatever they are exposed to. I provide children with a healthy, authentic space in which they can connect with their feelings through play and discussion. I also work with parents on styles of communication (those they might use with their children as well as their spouse/coparent) that may be inadvertently affecting children.
