Children can often frustrate us more than any other age group. Well, maybe not teenagers! But, have you forgotten that you were once a child too? Yes, we have all been through that period of life where we are curious about the world, curious about ourselves, have an incredible imagination, and playing is the greatest thing ever! Yet, we're still trying to learn about what's right and wrong. We don't understand the world and why things happen. We just know we're sad, but we don't know why.

As a counselor, I see children ages 4-12 every day in my school counseling position. I've also taught k-8 for 20 plus years as well as been a parent to two children and a step-parent to a daughter who is an adult now. Children involved in play therapy are usually able and willing to work through problems. Involving the parents in the therapy is an important part of this process, as well.

Children many times do not even know how they feel about their circumstances and often have difficulty communicating it. Even if they did know many times they won't share it with a parent out of fear. Therapy helps a child overcome difficult emotions, learn how to regulate them in a healthy way, and provides valuable feedback for the parents. There are specific tools used that provide a child the ability to express their feeling accurately.

Finding a therapist who can work with young children is a challenge. Our therapist, Fred Theobald, has experience helping children who are dealing with issues of depression, adjustment to changes, coping with divorce, behavior problems at home, and social skills. By providing a warm, gentle approach, children are more likely to open up about what their experience is. He integrates parents into the therapy, so that they know how to work with their children, rather than against them. Contact us today to set up an appointment with Fred.

Young children can be the most challenging of all persons to get to open up and show you the truth of their world. It takes a truly well trained and dedicated person to work honestly and authentically for the child's benefit; not reading too much into and not missing details. I can utilize non-directive play therapy. I believe that small children communicate through play. I have experienced the healing that can felt by a child by showing a trusted adult via play, what is bothering them. Being part of the healing of Jesus' little lambs is my biggest privilege.

Many times, child therapists overdo the family system in their quest to seek effective solutions for emotional, learning or behavioral concerns with young children. And many times doctors overpathologize issues that shouldn’t be medicated necessarily. This leaves parents wondering what is the best route for their child? Introducing brainwave optimization technology. A fast, effective, natural, and less expensive way to allow your child's brain to make the optimizing changes it desires to make---on its own! Without any external force, opinion, medication, diagnostic, etc. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 877-606-6161.

Working with children is a specialty and must be treated in this way. Children are most commonly brought to therapy, not on their own motivation. I am able to build a rapport with children and help them understand the benefits of therapy. I am able to engage them in healing their hurts, or lessening their anxieties, or even empowering them to control their own behavior. I have built my life around working with and relating to children, and nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch them succeed and gain all that life has to offer.

Working with young children in therapy is the challenge of language. Children do not have the therapeutic language to express their feelings. As a therapist working with young children, I use activities, unstructured play, games and observations. My job is to help translate that I'm learning into a positive and productive counseling session. Working with teens and pre-teens my focus is to explore social issues, family relationships, self image that's affecting their behavior. I spent many years working with at-risk youth with great success. I specially enjoy working with youth with a diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder. Life skills counseling and coaching works well.

Children are special and they need a special kind of therapy to allow them to share in developmentally appropriate ways. I am a Registered Play Therapist with specialized training and credentials to work with children. Many therapists will work with children, but I encourage you to ask about their training and credentials. Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach that builds on children's normal communicative and learning process. Play therapy helps children express what is troubling them, using toys as words, and play as their language.
