Children are often misunderstood by grown-ups because they tend to express their feelings and perceptions through actions instead of words, and grown-ups often find these actions challenging or troublesome, which in turn leads to more misunderstanding. My approach with a child is thus to develop a therapeutic rapport, so the child can understand that he or she won't be judged personally for his or her actions or difficulties. This encourages the child to express him- or herself honestly and to appreciate counseling as an opportunity. I often also work closely with the parent(s) or guardian(s) since they play such an important part in the child's life and in how that child thinks and feels.
