I have a large amount of experience with children 5-18 years old. Kids can be resistant to visiting with a pscyhologist and I understand that, which creates a trusting relationship from the start. Once this is established, genuine changes start to take place.
I am confident in my ability to work with a wide range of child issues from: behavior problems, sibling conflict, and school difficulties, to abuse, neglect, and abandonment.

I work with children ages 6 and above. Empowerment is crucial in all therapy and what better time to learn self-empowerment than while still young. My doctoral dissertation involved Redecision Therapy. In this model the child ego state is where most therapeutic treatment is done. Children are not just small adults. Children can be both fragile and resilient. For children under the age of 6, I recommend play therapy, however I do not practice this mode of counseling. I teach the diagnosing of children in a graduate course I have taught about 8 semesters. Diagnoses is just a starting point however. Labels can be self-fulfilling and while important are wrought with dangers. Conservative wisdom.

Many times, child therapists overdo the family system in their quest to seek effective solutions for emotional, learning or behavioral concerns with young children. And many times doctors overpathologize issues that shouldn’t be medicated necessarily. This leaves parents wondering what is the best route for their child? Introducing brainwave optimization technology. A fast, effective, natural, and less expensive way to allow your child's brain to make the optimizing changes it desires to make---on its own! Without any external force, opinion, medication, diagnostic, etc. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 877-606-6161.

The key to effective counseling is meeting your client where they are at. Guiding someone is done in close proximity. When working with children, adults are often too far ahead. Helping children requires us getting down on their level. A child’s world is play. I like to use play as the means of expression in helping children cope with and change their world. For example, playing with superhero action figures and acting out bullying scenarios is a more effective intervention than talking with a boy about being bullied.

I offer play therapy for children of all ages. My play therapy approaches incorporate Adlerian methods, as well as person-centered and Jungian methods. Periodic parent and families are important to the process, in most cases. Play is the natural language of children. Play therapy helps with adjustment, anxiety, depression, overcoming trauma and elevation of self esteem. I also offer EMDR for children to assist with stress resolution and attachment strengthening.

My work with child includes parent involvement. I help them understand what their child is feeling, struggling with, and how they are expressing it through their behavior, since they do not have yet have the words to express what they're experiencing. While the child needs a safe place to express him/herself, parents also need guidance and direction in understanding the uniqueness of their child, and effective ways to respond to them. I also work with children going through major changes, such as a new sibling, re-marriages and blending families, adoptions, parents going back to work or changing schedules or jobs, moves, and high conflict divorce and custody disputes.

My days as a school teacher have equipped me with the skills to communicate and interact with young children. We will spend time playing, coloring or drawing in order to help your child relax and also to give them an opportunity to express themselves in "child speak". Children are not able to process and articulate feelings in the same manner as adults. It takes special patience and a tenderness to gain their respect and trust.
