I am a Marriage and Family therapist associate and have experience working with families with very young children (age 3 and up). I engage the child on their level and help them express their feelings and thoughts as well as work with the parents each step of the way to help with the healing process. I will work to help the child feel safe, comfortable and understood as we explore the topics in their life that need attention.

Children are unable to express complex ideas and emotions in the same manner as adults. They express their feelings through play. In therapy, they are encouraged, through play, to lead the sessions much in the same way an adult would lead their therapy session. Working with children requires the ability to understand children on their level. Too often, adults speak to them as if they were adults and interpret their conversations on an adult level. I have been working with children for 20 years and have experience in helping them cope with PTSD, trauma, abuse, grief, stress, anxieity and other issues.

Directive and non-directive play therapy are the two main ways I work with children in therapy. I use art, sand, toys and games to help children feel safe in the counseling environment. Children express themselves through play, using their imaginations to share with the therapist their thoughts and feelings. Working with young children also heavily involves the parents, teaching them new skills that help with behavior modification.

Although I work with persons of all ages, the heart of my practice is children ages 3-12. Imagine being angry, but when asked to describe how you're feeling, you could not use the word "angry." For children, toys are their words, and not giving them an opportunity to play out their feelings with toys is like taking away their words right before asking them to describe how they feel. Where adults use words, children use play to communicate and make sense of the world around them. As a result, I use a variety of play-based techniques to allow children to explore ways to handle challenges, transitions and feelings -- at their own developmental level & in their own language.

If your child likes video games, superheroes, comic books, and cartoons, I speak your kid's language. The most important part of working with any counselor is that they understand you and your perspective. I specialize in the use of pop culture and geeky things like video games and comic books so your child will feel comfortable and understood. Regardless of the behaviors or issues you would like addressed for your child, it's important that they know they can be themselves and possibly even have some fun.

Alongside my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, I have a specialization in Child and Adolescent Development. I have over ten years of experience in providing outpatient counseling to children. I am a National Certified Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor. I employ Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, and Expressive Art Therapy when providing counseling to children. This provides them a chance to explore, process, and heal without having to use the vocabulary we as adults use in the therapeutic process. By providing various creative outlets, children are able to correlate their play experience with emotions; there by expanding their vocabulary while growing.

Young children require a special therapeutic presence. My experience has been that usually 30 minutes is adequate and appropriate for their attention spans. Counseling might involve artwork, games, video-storytelling, acting out stories/scenarios with dolls or other representative figures, going for a walk... Trust and gentleness is of the utmost importance and creative exploration is key.
