Research shows trying to just “fix the kid” does not generally work. The family should be involved if at all possible. I made it a special point to learn the specific strategies and techniques for this population as I went through my schooling. To this day I have approx. one decade of experience in working with this population, and I look forward to continuing to work with children at the youngest ages, but with family involvement.

Working with children ages five and up who are experiencing bullying, social alienation, learning difficulties, self esteem corrosion, and conflicted feelings related to divorce, is a primary focus of my 30+ years of clinical practice. Age appropriate sessions involve both talk play and artistic therapeutic techniques while providing practical tools for effective communication. In a collaborative partnership I include the parents, teaching them effective parenting strategies for each unique child. My goal is to educate parents to become change leaders in their homes. My objective is to provide the family with the skills and tools to achieve ongoing success in their home environment.

I work with children down to age 11, and my partner works with children down to any age. I primarily do individual therapy, while my partner works with the family. Children's symptoms of anxiety and depression, in some cases, can be associated with them feeling responsible for, or caught up in the middle of parental conflict. Children under the age of 5 may cry, act out, regress, or try to distract parents. Children age 6 to middle adolescence may try to intervene in the conflict. Cues that parental conflict is too high are: repeated attempts to reduce conflict, withdrawal, or exhibiting acting out behavior.
