Young children often communicate their feelings and thoughts through play. Our play therapy methods help to uncover how a child is feeling and what parents can do to address the problem. We also provide information on child development to assist parents to have realistic expectations of their child and to know what is normal and not normal. We provide recommendations on how parents can modify their parenting style to meet the needs of the child.

In my approach to children, children's development, and parenting I use the best most helpful parts that come out of years of work in this area: attachment parenting concepts (Neufeld), 'focusing' for awareness and communication (Gendlin), Barbara Colorosso's common sense and firmness, developmental stage awareness, much experience and practical sense. I connect well with children of all ages and understand parenting from the inside out. There is often so much that can be done that will bring improvement and relief.

I have found that play and other expressive therapies are helpful when working with children. This is because play is often their language. For example I have used sand trays and play figurines to let children explain how they feel about a particular situation in their life. It is often difficult to expect them to explain what is going on. It is far more effective to have them 'show' it.

Parents may be concerned with a destructive, needy, or unresponsive child, and rightfully so. Early problem behaviours are cries for help, and will only fester if buried and left unaddressed. Young children do not have the language to talk about their experiences, so it is helpful to watch their play, and, with their parents present, help them through the confusion and pain as it arises spontaneously. Children are resilient and often able to heal quickly with the right support. I work from an attachment based perspective that strengthens and sustains the bonds parents already have with their children. I will show parents what to look for, how to respond to their child.

Children are so precious to me, and because I have two of my own...I know how precious they are to you too. I work together with my specially trained (psychiatric dog) named Target, when I work with children. Not only does Target help a child to feel at ease, but there is something incredibly special that happens when a child is cuddled up to a dog with whom he feels both warmth and softness. It doesn't hurt either that 'Target' is a great intensive for children wanting to return. (Which is often a concern) Also my relaxed style, experience with working as a Youth Leader, and Directing Children's productions, gives me an edge on making sessions fun, hip and creative.
