Children developmentally believe that they are the center of the universe; therefore, when things are good, it's to their credit. Conversely, when situations are less than favorable, it's their fault. In families with addictions, I often provide an educational program for the children called "An Elephant In The Living Room." The program teaches children that the addict is a good person with an illness that can be treated, just like other diseases. It also shows them that they didn't cause it and that they can't fix it. During the process of helping children, sometimes adults finally gain that insight for themselves.
