Child counseling at The Marriage and Family Clinic is fun and engaging. Children of all ages have shorter attention spans so traditional "talk therapy" can be frustrating for them. Our approach at The Marriage and Family Clinic strives to help children feel calm and comfortable while engaging them in a variety of therapeutic activities such as drawing, sculpting, letter writing, etc. These activities help children address and express the difficulties they're experiencing in playful ways while still getting the help they need to overcome the challenges they are having. We can help your child get the help they need and enjoy counseling, too.

I specialize in providing play therapy to young children. I have an office where I offer both directive and non-directive play therapy to children ages 2 and above. In play therapy, I like to include the family rather than treating the child as an individual. One specialty I offer with young children is and evidenced-based, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which helps children who have been severely traumatized to learn coping skills and to be better equipped to deal with life's events after the trauma. When the child is supported with their trauma, then concerning behaviors begin to decrease.

I work with children down to age 6. I take into account their developmental level along with their symptoms in treating their concerns. Parents are always part of the process, and I assist parent in developing routines, boundaries, and rules that help guide adaptive behaviors for their children. If your child needs help with emotional regulation then I like using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) to help them process their feelings and gain more control over their emotional states.

Do you have concerns about your child or teen's behaviors or overall functioning? Understanding your child's behavior can be challenging, as children's natural ability to communicate is through play rather than words. Adolescence presents its own challenges, sometimes leaving teens to struggle with self-esteem issues, depression, anger, anxiety and identity issues. Utilizing a non-judgmental and caring approach, I provide a comfortable space for children and teens to explore their inner experiences. I also work with children and teens on developing concrete tools for managing behaviors, feelings, and thoughts that negatively impact their relationships and overall level of happiness.

As a registered play therapist I can work with children as young as 3. I use family and filial methods of play. I believe young children do better in their own environment so I do home based therapy. The parents role is very important and I keep them informed at all times. Young children (3-6) have short attention spans so I keep their session about 30 minutes. Older children sessions are about 45-50 minutes. I work with books, toys, art, clay and others methods such as story-telling. If there are attachment or separation or abuse issues these are fully discussed with the parent or primary caretaker.

It takes a very special and unique approach to work and understand children. Just like adults, children internalize a great amount of what is presented to them in their environment. Through different forms of play therapy, I help children understand and verbalize feelings that are difficult to identify because of the developmental stage that the child is in. Through this approach of play therapy, many children find comfort as well as emotional and psychological progress and healing in therapy.

Young children do not have the verbal skills to explain what is bothering them and may become angry or depressed. I communicate with children at the appropriate age level using books, games, and drawing. As we play together, your child will feel safe and find a way to express feelings not easily expressed because of lack of words. I will help your child develop new coping and verbal skills that will allow expression of feelings. I will, or course, communicate with you as the parent and make suggestions to help you interact better with your child

I love working with kids. I currently work as a Experiential Play Therapist (part-time) for a safe house in the Metro-Denver area. Children are much stronger, smarter, and capable than many adults give them credit for. Children speak through play and through play therapy they can being to get their voice and identity back. I am an advocate for children and their protection. All the children I work with receive the upmost care and education I can offer. Through a therapeutic relationship and safe environment your children can begin a process of healing and development that will set them on a path early in life towards freedom and significance.
