Children experience depression, anxiety, fears, uncertainties, self-esteem issues, and confusion. Sometimes, their experiences are even bigger than an adults because they feel that they have so little power to change their situation or who they are. Play Therapies of all sorts helps young children explore, express and resolve such reactions so they can become free and fully functioning. Childhood anger is also often an expression of fear, self-hatred, feeling powerless or confused too. Dr. Carol Francis has been working with children (and their parents), ages 3-18 since 1977 in clinics, hospitals, schools and now in her private practice. Call 310-543-1824

I work with young children therapeutically, and perform evaluations for ADHD and developmental or learning problems. Because young children lack the capacity to express them verbally, play therapy is the treatment of choice. Through play, children gain a better understanding of their experiences, work through issues that are challenging to them, and feel more cared for. I almost always incorporate parenting sessions to provide support and strategies for parents and family sessions to improve family communication and relationships. Within my group practice, we also work with infants who may be experiencing bonding difficulties due to adoption, mother's postpartum depression, or trauma.

For about 7 years I only worked with children in my practice. The rest of my practice has been split working with adults and with kids. With kids, its all about their instinct and comfort. If they sense that the therapist isn't comfortable or experienced with kids, they won't engage in the therapy process.
I use a variety of techniques working with children, depending on their age. For smaller children, art therapy and play therapy can be very successful for a variety of reasons. The main reason is that it takes the focus off of them and they feel more at ease to talk and be open. For older children who can handle "talk therapy", using simpler language can be effective.

A child's job is to be happy! However, for some children due to circumstances that don't always make sense, they experience emotional or behavioral issues that get in the way of their functioning. When I work with children have an eclectic approach to therapy. I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, psycho-dynamic therapy, solution focused therapy, narrative therapy, play therapy and art therapy. The interventions I utilize help children feel safe and talk through the thoughts and emotions they are experiencing. I will introduce interventions which will help them increase their coping skills and communication skills and process any traumas.

Is your young child withdrawing, acting out, seems anxious or worried much of the time? Children have difficulty putting their thoughts and feelings to words many times, and we see it expressed in their play or lack of play. If your child is showing behaviors or feelings that concern you, I can help you to assess those to determine if your child is in a developmental phase or something more serious that requires intervention. Call me for a complimentary 30-minute consultation to determine if we are a good match.

Many times, child therapists overdo the family system in their quest to seek effective solutions for emotional, learning or behavioral concerns with young children. And many times doctors overpathologize issues that shouldn’t be medicated necessarily. This leaves parents wondering what is the best route for their child? Introducing brainwave optimization technology. A fast, effective, natural, and less expensive way to allow your child's brain to make the optimizing changes it desires to make---on its own! Without any external force, opinion, medication, diagnostic, etc. Contact email@example.com or 877-606-6161.

I work with 12 year olds and up. For young teens we use games, pillow fights, exercise, drawing, any medium that would make it more comfortable for the teen to open and share. When beneficial, I bring the parents into the end of the session so that they know what the teen is needing in their assistancxe with that next week. Art and journaling are a significant part of homework to allow the youth to express and reduce their emotional overload.
