Children's and adolescents' brains are not fully developed at their stage of the life cycle. Therefore, there are special tools that I use in my assessments of issues normally occuring around this age group. I use a " young children" language when I teach them what I would normally teach adults. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for children to know how to think rationally while they are just in the learning phase of their lives. When they know how to think in ways that work for them, they will stand a better chance of avoiding the mental mistakes that most of us have learned incorrectly from the different environments we were exposed to, thus, will grow up to be happier adults!

Here at Family-Therapy we understand parents can’t know everything there is about parenting. Children experience problems as they grow and mature. Sometimes, they need to talk to someone. Your child can learn problem-solving skills, which will benefit them over their lifetime. Children benefit from talking to someone about family discord, separation sibling rivalry, divorce, death, school pressures, test anxiety, peer pressures, or bullying. Are you a stepparent? Are you and your partner struggling to integrate 2 families together, create common rules and boundaries? Are you constantly fighting with your teen about rules, schoolwork or curfew? Has your teen refused to talk to you anymore? We of....

Sandra Forbes, Relationship Solutions helps parents help their children. Challenges faced by children are addressed by understanding the child and people involved and the family. In some situations the children who come to Relationship Solutions have been diagnosed with for example aspergers syndrome, ADD or ADHD. They also may have no diagnosis and yet there are challenges identified. How parents work with their children in a way that works best for all family members (including themselves!) is where we focus. We are experts at Identifying family patterns that are working well and others that were once effective and may need now to shift.

Children and youth may need a neutral, safe place to express themselves. Therapy can help healing, develop coping skills, and relieve stress. If you notice a change of personality, loss of pleasure in enjoyable activities, sleep difficulties, withdrawal, fears and anxieties, or a behavioural regression, therapy might be recommended. When dealing with children and youth using the least invasive method is proven to be the most effective. Accordingly, if possible, I like to counsel the parent(s) to help the child, and only meet with their child if required or if it is requested by the child.

Child counselling and therapy supports children and families through difficulties; family changes, unexplained behaviours, learning challenges, anxiety, losses, managing emotions, or with parenting coaching. Creative approaches including play therapy keep children interested, and involve parents so the family as a team learns how to make hard things easier. For youth, talk therapy and creative ideas help to motivate change, with appropriate parent involvement. My background in education and family work gives me unique experience to support your family to understand yourself better, develop coping skills, explore emotions, and work towards the family lifestyle you prefer. Serve Ottawa & area.

My priority when counselling children is to provide them with a warm, child-friendly, and stable therapeutic relationship within which therapy can occur. Children will feel safe and be able to express themselves when they experience the genuineness and safety of the therapist. With younger children between the ages of four to twelve, I provide therapy through play (in other words, "play therapy") because children of this age have less developed verbal skills. In play therapy, the child and therapist communicate through toys and play in a fun yet therapeutic manner. This allows the child to express and resolve his or her troubles with the help of the therapist.

I specialize in working with children and adolescents. With younger children, I use psychodynamically oriented play, art and games to enable children to express themselves. It is important for me to work closely and collaboratively with parents to figure out a way to help their children. With adolescents, I use talk therapy as a way of working through issues of anxiety, depression, trauma, difficulties with peers or academics, attachment/adoption issues, gender/sexuality issues, substance use, coping skills, or emotion regulation.
