As someone who considers himself a “Christian” counselor, I have to ask myself is there a difference between what I do and a traditional counselor? And if so, how would a client know the difference?
Let me start with what clients should be aware of. Regardless of who you see, this idea of a counselor as being objective, neutral, and free of any moral bias is inaccurate. The core business of counseling as it stands today is about seeing someone to help you change your behavior (i.e. thoughts, feelings, actions). But I believe God wants more than behavioral change, he wants deep inner change that touches the soul of who we are. That is the work I strive towards, inner change.
Jeff VanZant, LMHC-A
Did you know that a longitudinal study has shown that therapists and clients who are aligned as to values make the most progress? As a former campus minister I have always worked in faith-based settings where I have the freedom to incorporate spiritual interventions with clients when they are open and ready. My latest book, "Prayer In Counseling ... The Practitioner's Handbook" is a testimony to the therapeutic validity of this often neglected resource for helping clients turn the corner towards lasting change and healing. For me, Christian counseling is less about a label and more about a conviction as to who and what is our ultimate source of truth and strength for living.

As a counselor who is a Christian, I value the integration of faith for one’s emotional wellbeing. You may have spent many hours reading and integrating the scriptures into your life, and yet, you find that your life is still without peace and maybe you question if God really cares about you. Our work together includes exploring the questions that you have and learning new ways to relate to yourself, others, and God, so that you experience God’s breath of life and hope. At core, my work with you is to hold to biblical foundations and walk with you on your journey of healing and redemption.

As a Christian it is comforting to know that your therapist has the same beliefs that you do. Feel safe sharing your concerns in a judgement free environment. Be confident that the changes you want to see as a result of working together will be mine as well. Better self esteem, healing from past friendships, couple relationships or family dynamics can be addressed and improved. Anxiety, depression, feelings of failure
can all be changed. Understanding what troubles you and how to live differently is what I want to help you
achieve. I offer a comfortable and confidential counseling environment. Located conveniently in North Seattle.

My Christian faith leads me to believe that our problems are often a source of potential growth rather then merely a symptom or sign of personal failure. I believe God is good that He loves us and not only has the power to help us but is THE power calling us and equipping us toward a hope filled destiny. My thinking is influenced by Leanne Payne, Henri Nouwen, John Eldredge, Dan Allender and much of the recovery movements focus on the Twelve Steps. I am an evangelical but when not working with Christians my goal is to honor their process right where they are and not exercise undue influence. Much of my reading in the field is from authorities that are not Christian but are profoundly helpful
Shelley Bartels, MA, LMHC
My approach to counseling is shaped by my Christian worldview. As a biblical, Christian counselor its my desire that Christ enable me to participate in His work of transformation in people’s lives. Christianity teaches that we are created to be in relationship with God and one another, but because of brokenness in our world our frustrated longings for relationship can result in many problems. I welcome integrating your Christian faith into your counseling experience, exploring how your faith influences your decisions, thoughts and emotions. Whether you're dealing with depression, anger, anxiety or relational struggles you can regain joy, strength, improved relationships and peace.
Jacquelyn Franssen, MA, LMHC-A
I have always been a Christian, but only recently have I adopted this faith based approach into my counseling practice. I have been doing faith based counseling since May 2010. I do not pressure or push my clients to believe a certain way; I just use this as an additional outlet for support within the therapeutic relationship. Please reach out to me if you are interested in seeking faith based therapy, I'd be happy to discuss.

Christian counseling is unique in that you are offered a theological frame work to understand intimacy and separation in relationship. Christian counseling can greatly deepen your faith and invite you to stronger relationship with God. I believe Christian counseling is unique in emphasizing that suffering well is part of our pilgrimage as followers of Christ.
