Couples counseling begins with a thorough assessment of each individual’s personality. Working with couples poses the challenge of assisting them to understand the art and learned method of communication. In its simplicity exists the complexity of two individuals who, in most relationships, are as different as night and day. Often they may think their communication is like two people from two different countries. This is the baseline in developing and healing any relationship. Our culture presents a variety of problems that affect couples in today’s society. A combination of psycho-education, psychodynamic exploration into the individual’s own family history and a restructuring of thoughts....

I especially enjoy working with couples, or helping patients with their relationships. Having been happily married myself for 25 years with two grown children, I am especially empathic to relationship problems. First and foremost, I help a couple to see that their troubled relationship is due to a system breakdown and not one particular problem. The solution very generally involves more structure, more fun and less blame and criticism.

We all come from different families of origin... which different views and opinions about what is acceptable in relationships. When a couple joins as one, each person must recognize his/her family or origin and together define their NEW family story TOGETHER. This is a process that can take some time; however, it unites a couple while still appreciating and honoring their past traditions and teachings.

Couples can experience all kinds of relationship difficulties. Sometimes counseling is even used to process the end of a relationship. For whatever issue seems to be causing a struggle for both of you, counseling can be a way to sort things out with an objective person providing feedback to both parties. It is not always an easy journey, but a worthwhile effort as all relationships take work!
