When I work with couples, I am very intentional about first listening to both individuals and then seeking to slow down the process of how you communicate with one another. By doing this, we are practicing and preparing you both for those real, in-the-moment conversations that seem to keep you stuck in the same place. By growing in your ability to listen to each other, you will begin to understand what it is that your significant other needs and you will begin to feel more heard and understood. When you do this, more often than not, you are able to break those old habits of communicating and relating to each other. Call me to find out more about this process.

My approach to couples counseling is inspired by a combination of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman approach. In EFT, we'll look at emotions from your past and how they are affecting your present-day relationship. We'll discover and focus on changing patterns of interaction or communication issues that have been causing stress and pain. Using Gottman's ideas, we'll focus on behavior changes to enhance the positive aspects of your relationship that may have been lost. This approach is successful in helping you find your way back to a happy, more fulfilled connection with your partner.

Relationships are difficult and many relationships can be healed if given the opportunity. I believe in addressing core issues in a relationship that address the couple itself. Why is the couple acting in this cycle and what can I do to help you identify your cycle and find a healthy way of interacting. I draw much of my work from Dr. John Gottman's research on healthy relationships and am not afraid of giving frank feedback when I feel couples are being verbally or emotionally abusive to each other. I believe in setting clear boundaries so couples learn to fight fairly so both sides can communicate their needs with each other without feeling shamed, degraded, or criticized.

I work with mixed culture couples, where the cultural differences can add a subtle level of dis-ease to the relationship. These differences can effect the interpretation of differing communication styles. Different cultures attiribute different value to different interactions, the expectations for men and women can be different, the expectations for wives and husbands can be different. The change in expections and assumptions adds another layer of confusion. The couples, because of the blend of different cultures, can be very strong, healthy, and offer a long and supporitve life.

Each couple that comes to see Tom Lumsden is unique. However, there are some commonalites. Knowing how to share one's feelings in a "safe environment" is very important. Tom helps his couples to work toward that end. Usually one of the two in the marriage is the better communicator. Tom uses a communication tool that has helped to teach these couples how to better share their feelings. Tom is not against separating a couple for a "season" while they work on issues until it is more amenable for them to be together again. His goal is always to support the marriage, but he has seen times when this is not always for the best.

My work with couples helps to increase emotional awareness and communication pathways for the transparency of the relationship. Developmental dynamics and systemic influences are explored as they prove to affect the relational style of the participants of the couple. Discovering a middle ground between individual and relational responsibilities is a check point throughout the work we do. Creating a safe and exploratory space for the purpose of openness and the strengthening of vulnerability is of central importance. It is about developing as a team and finding the rhythm within the dynamic to promote optimal success.

Communication problems is listed as the number one reason why couples come into my office. Learning effective communication, how to love and be loved, how to cherish a relationship and enjoy one another are learned behaviors. Learn tools to enrich and change your relationship in a healthier direction. Having a third party help with that process is what I do.

Rob and Dori started Marriage and Family Life over 20 years ago with a passion to make real differences in a few lives. After hundreds of clients, both Rob and Dori are even more passionate, with many lessons learned throughout the journey. After much research and practice, Rob and Dori changed their counseling approach with couples and families. Their proven method is to counsel together, which is more effective in most marital and family therapy settings, versus the classic one-counselor approach.

At the most basic level, my philosophy is systemic, and thus grounded in the complex web of how we relate to other people. I believe relationships are life’s greatest teacher. We learn, grow and gain happiness from them; however, they can also be the root of our deepest scars. We all encounter roadblocks in relationships where we are frustrated that our communication is failing, our unity is shaken, and feelings are hurt. Often times, we attempt to reason with our partners and in the same manner over and over, leaving us exhausted. I hope to offer you a different experience. My priority is to help you and your loved ones break the destructive cycle that is causing you pain and distress.

The skills needed to keep a relationship happy, through thick and thin, are not something most of us learn. We tend to have some place we need to grow, heal, or figure out. And once we face a challenge in our primary romantic relationship, we either have to change, or face an unhappy and uncertain future in that relationship. I bring an appreciative eye to the couples I work with - helping them learn how to overcome whatever is in front of them.

All relationships go through periods of ups and downs, but sometimes couples find themselves unable to get out of a down-time and back to feeling connected and happy. I work with couples facing issues such as conflict, communication and intimacy. I approach couples counseling in three phases, first exploring, identifying and assessing for patterns and areas of disconnection in your relationship. Second we begin to repair and build new pathways for communication, connection and closeness. During the third phase we will look to create and generate for your future, identifying values, goals and dreams, building a foundation to support growth and change over the life of your relationship.

Couples counseling is sometimes a difficult sell, because one partner is reluctant or skeptical about the process. Often people are afraid that the counselor is going to take sides or be against one of the people. In therapy, I strive to make both clients feel heard and valued in the therapeutic process. Both people need to get something from the interaction in order for any healing to take place. People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you are trying to communicate better, have experienced some kind of infidelity or breach of trust, or are trying to determine whether to keep or to end your relationship. I can assist you in working through these issues.

When working with couples, I use “Emotionally Focused Therapy” to help partners deeply reconnect on the level of needs and feelings (as opposed to having that same unproductive argument over and over again). I also use very practical research-derived techniques to help partners develop strategies for successful communication and for joint living and dreaming, while, at the same time, maintaining their identities as whole and separate human beings.

Couples and marital counseling is my passion. I love helping you find the points where the relationship breaks down and walking with you to a new union with renewed trust, intimacy and understanding. There is often a need for growth in one or both individuals and this can involve some initial stress but most often the commitment to the relationship provides resources that energize creative resources that produce healing and vitality in the relationship.

Working with couples is by far the most challenging and rewarding part of my practice. Exploring the issues presented in each relationship allows me to see how we are all similar but still unique in what we experience being close and committed to another human being. In the work we will look at where the attachment bonds have been damaged or broken. We will look at the experience from your past to see its affect on t he your relationship presently.

I work with couples by teaching developmental stages of couples and then teaching communication tools that increase listening and trust. It is important to learn to manage your anxiety over your differences.I also teach fighting rules. Couples counseling usually is shorter term counseling. I work with couples newly married and want to build skills, couples in crisis and with couples who are trying to decide to stay married or get a divorce.

Couples can expect me to work with them through the various problems they are aware of and seeking help with, while also searching for the root of the problem(s) and how each person's issues contributes to their struggles, so they can achieve not only wellness and healing in their relationship, but also a sense of peace and wholeness in themselves individually.
