Together we identify strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the relationship. Using practical skills, we build on the strengths, strengthen the weaknesses, and fill in the gaps. Couples counseling is unique because your relationship is my client. I consider the unique needs of you and your partner, but the main focus is on your relationship. My role in couples counseling is to assist communication in your relationship. My approach involves teaching you and your partner skills to distinguish healthy communication from unhealthy communication. The idea is for your relationship to replace unhealthy patterns of interaction with healthier styles of communication.

I have completed Level 1 training in the Gottman Method. I use this approach when working with couples. I begin with the Gottman Assessment, which consists of more than 300 questions. This assessment provides information such as relationship satisfaction, communication styles, viewpoints on whether you feel known by your partner, trust, infidelity issues, commitment levels, and much more. The assessment provides a roadmap of the journey towards improving communication and the friendship with your spouse.

There are countless models of healthy romantic relationships, from monogamous to polyamorous, and unique variations between partners. The scripts for dating and longterm relationships of our parents’ generations may not be applicable to your relationship, and there is no formal education in how to be a good partner or how to identify unhealthy relationships. But there is psychological research that shows that effective communication, emotional openness, intimacy, and other factors contribute to healthy relationships. Creating these conditions are skills that can be learned. I practice brief humanistic and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) to help my LGBTQ and hetero clients learn these skills.

We help couples identify what contributes to these patterns. We explore what each person thinks a good relationship looks like and what barriers may be currently in the way of achieving that view.
