Couples counseling tends to focus on relationship building and/or rebuilding and typically includes both partners, although one partner may choose to initiate counseling alone and invite the other partner in when deemed appropriate, or not. The therapeutic process may focus on identification of values, needs, and roles within the relationship with the overall goals being focus on relational strengths, improved communication, and change in dysfunctional behaviors.

Feelings, wants, needs, and a mutual understanding of the couples are explored. Conflicts resolutions are developed to improve relationships. Solution Focus Therapy is utilized to identify the ideal state, the Miracle, then goals are written to achieve the state and progress is noted weekly. Past hurts and misunderstanding are explored during therapy. Role play is also effective in couples gaining understanding.

What are the most common couples' issues? If you are thinking "communication, conflict, sex, money, child rearing" you are correct. Couples work is unique and interesting. What a lot of people don't understand it that of course you have different viewpoints - you are in different bodies, have different life experiences and are actually looking at different views! Couples counseling can be scary… Making the choice to try couples counseling is a big step that two people take together. It means admitting things are not perfect in your relationship, and that can be scary. Relationships are hard. Even when you’ve found the “perfect” partner and fall deeply in love.
