My approach to couples counseling is focusing on the health of each individual, their strengths, and mutual goals. I believe that love is a choice, not merely an emotion. I borrow from several theories, depending upon the personality and needs of the clients. Helping couples learn how to communicate and deal with conflict effectively and respectfully is also important.

When working with couples in conflict, I practice from the perspective of Emotion Focused Therapy. The route to healed relationships involves changing the process of how you and your significant other relate. I will help you change the pattern of your interactions by first helping you identify the pattern, explore how you each individually contribute to the pattern, and coach you on engaging in new, positive ways of connecting. I have also practiced these principles in working with couples on relational enrichment. If that is something you desire, I would enjoy working with you toward that goal.

I believe that the greatest cause of strife in relationships is that people lose focus on the relationship and start focusing on themselves. Current culture is constantly hammering us to get “our needs met”. However, for a couple in trouble, both members end up obsessively demanding their needs get met while making those demands in ways that almost guarantee that they won’t get met. When we focus on the health of our relationship, we are much more effective in getting our own needs met. Couples counseling can be appropriate for marital and pre-marital counseling, but also for sibling, co-worker, or/or adult parent/child relationships.

Relationships account for such a large amount of our time, energy and emotions. I believe they also reflect so much of how we see God and how He works in and through us. I am convinced you can experience a fruitful and joyful relationship no matter how many challenges you face or burdens you feel from the past. This can happen in the context of a relationship where openness and forgiveness are working hand in hand. I really enjoy working with couples and have found a lot of success in helping in the process of healing and redeeming relationships and marriages.

The communication technique that I will teach you will deepen your relationship and bring you closer. Your partner and you will learn to hear and validate each other's experiences, feelings, and needs. In this way, you will have a tool to use in your life together so that you can solve most issues without seeking outside help. Most couples can learn this technique in 8-10 sessions. I will encourage you to practice together at home, starting with simple issues. We will focus on behaviors that each would like to see changed in the other partner and identify feelings around those behaviors. We will also clarify what behaviors you would like to see in their place. This will be deeply rewarding.

With our partners we face some of the biggest challenges because our companionship is one of the most important and risky relationships we have. As a couple we experience highs and lows whether preparing for a life together becoming willing to risk being open and vulnerable with another. We work to help guide you in finding the vision of what you want as a couple, give you the tools to make it happen, and support you in making the changes you want that will help you have the type of connection and relationship that is most fulfilling.

Conventional therapy DOES NOT WORK for couples. Sadly, when the therapist becomes a referee, and does not have the answers to your problems, he/she may actually encourage divorce, due to their own discomfort or limited ability. You do not need a referee. You need skills. IMAGO THERAPY PROVIDES YOU WITH THE SKILLS TO THRIVE IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS! I am a Certified Imago Therapist. who can steer you from conflict to connection. Conflict is simply healing trying to happen. Helping couples understand the powerful dynamics between partners, creating both pleasure and pain, is wonderful work. My couples not only learn about healing their relationship but I teach them the model for change as well. I facilitate the therapeutic process with theory, stories and humor. I listen and learn as much as I can about what each couple needs. Soon, they become relationship experts, for themselves.

It’s important to understand how we unknowingly bring our past into our current relationships. Learn habits to communicate better, argue in a healthy manner, resolve conflict, productively expression emotions, share your needs/wants clearly, work through unresolved issues, and negotiate change in your relationship. Also examine how to rekindle intimacy while understanding and embracing your partner’s flaws.

I apply Mindfulness, CBT, Narrative, and Strength-Based therapy to couple counseling. I help partners see the relationship in a more objective manner. Early on I help them stop the "blame game" to better disrupt the perpetual cycle of conflict. I encourage couples to speak honestly about their emotions, hurts, anger, fears, etc, in each session and trust that the counseling process is a safe and supportive space to heal. I am an unbiased witness in the healing and mediation process. I help couples learn to listen, validate and spend quality time with each other.
