In our multicultural society, many people are attracte to those of different backgrounds. Their accent, exotic appearance, or unfamilair relationship style are often irresistable. But the very things that attract can also create challenges. Multicultural romance often ends in heartbreak.
In our sessions, my clients get a heads-up in relating to those outside of their culture. They learn how to do a multicultural reality check, and identify the key indicators that spell future trouble. The goal of therapy is for singles and couples to make their relationship with their partner the best that it can be.
I see people of all sexualities, cultures, races, religions and backgrounds.
Lynne Jones, MA, RCC
I have been trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the Gottman Method and Family Systems. Typically I meet with the couple together for the first session to get an understanding of the presenting problem from both perspectives. From there I meet with each person individually to take a brief relationship and family history and to form a relationship of trust and safety with each partner. The goal is to identify the negative cycle of communication between partners, identify underlying feelings and fears that drive this cycle and finally to create a more secure bond between the couple. We will also look at what is going right in your relationship and how to build on that.

The most revealing and intimate relationship we can experience is to that person with whom we choose to spend our lives. It is also the one place in our lives where we stand to encounter the deepest anguish and heart ache even though it offers the most profound meaning that our lives are capable of. Therapy helps to uncover the emotional possibilities lying within the closest of life relationships. It does take work to make it work, however. Couples therapy offers a way to address what it is that gets in the way, and provides a means of resolving the barriers that create emotional distance in the relationship. At the very least we stand to know ourselves better within this relationship.

Holly Yager has many years experience providing couples counselling.
Holly can help couples -- whether dating, cohabitating, married, same-sex -- to improve their relationships in the following ways:
enhance communication skills, encourage safety and openness, learn to get both partner's needs met, know how best to support one another, make important decisions and plans, and work together as a team.
Gayle Way, Ph.D., R., Psych.
I praactice Couples Therapy from the perspective of Energetic Self-Manifestation (ESM) - an Energetic Process. The co-creative process which ensues amongst the Energy, the facilitator and the couple, serves to create a sense of safety. Within this safety, the core issues of concern to the individuals/couple is brought up, i.e. what is really happening and what is truly significant for the individuals present. Moreover, the sense of safety and empowerment created by the Energy supports individuals in "finding their voice" and in speaking their truth more readily. In giving everyone a voice and in supporting each in listening, the Energy supports individuals in manifesting authenticity.

How couples deal with disappointments and conflict in the relationship can either repair or lead to resentments and withdrawal between them. In therapy for the most part we are looking at how these dynamics have developed and beginning to create a space where you can communicate to have a deeper understanding and repair the hurt and disappointment that arises between you. It is important to realize that therapy is not about taking sides but helping you both to understand each others perspective more deeply. Delyse also has experience with working with same sex couples.
Tamara Knott, BA, BComm, MA, RCC
Couples counselling offers a safe environment in order to begin the process of making decisions for the future of your relationship. Many people often find it easier to say the things that they need to in front of a counsellor. Sometimes it is impossible to step back from the problems in the relationship with a view of moving forward when you are embroiled in turmoil. Having an objective helper in the room can allow each party to release themselves for healing and growth. Whether you have a specific problem or are just feeling disconnected, counselling can help.
Iona Monk, MA, RCC.
When a couple comes to counselling, they are often desperate for help. They have usually been arguing and drifting farther and farther apart. They feel lonely and dissappointed in their relationship. It is my goal as an Emotionally Focused therapist to help couples identify their patterns and behaviors, so they can make better choices and see major improvement. Through therapy, you begin to understand how your behaviors have impacted your partner, and led to the creation of the emotional distance between you. In essence, I give couples the tools they need to feel closer and rediscover the connection and intimacy they thought was lost forever.
