Many people struggle with depression. Depression can strike the young and the aged. Depression is also one of the most debilitating and prevalent emotional issue in our society. There are many benefits to learning about how to better deal and live with depression. There are also many ways to better handle depression, rather than just treating with medicine.

I have found the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model of therapy to be highly effective at helping people to overcome depression. Much of depression takes place when people have thoughts that result in powerful negative thinking. This negative thinking leads to negative feelings, which lead to negative behaviors that keep the person in a negative spiral. Consider how you might engage in this dynamic. If you do, something needs to and can be done to break that loop. I’ve broken the loop for people many times in the last decade and can do the same for you.

Depression is an area I have focused on for more than a decade. I help people to gain a deeper insight about themselves, thereby improving their ability to make better decisions and decrease their depression. I've recently heard a statistic that ~1/3 of American women have taken medication for it at some point in their lives. If true, that is an astounding figure. Unfortunately the medicine does not cure, but only supresses the symptoms. For long-term success, therapy is an essential component.

I have worked with clients suffering from depression in a variety of clinical settings and with a wide range of clients from various gender, age groups and backgrounds. My approach with depression is to join with client in a non-judgmental environment and discuss precipitating events and triggers that lead to feelings of depression. We then process and develop coping skills specific to each individual client.

I feel that depression effects all of us at one time or another, however, my approach is simple and that is to focus your negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Much of the time, depression can be reversed through cognitive restating statements or "reframes." For example, " I get the summer blues because summer is over and there isn't anything to look forward too." A reframe would be, " summer is over, however, I am looking forward to the fall and beautiful colors of the leaves."

Depression can be overwhelming, and it can usually be improved and/or healed by using a combination of treatments. I will listen to your story until you feel really heard and understood. Then we may look at specific actions you may take to decrease symptoms. We may use Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) to help you listen to the part of you that holds the depressed feeling. It is amazing that the depression can lift by using the IFS approach to caring for yourself.

Depression is a most debilitating condition and clients can be helped to effectively reduce their sadness. Individuals who struggle with depression usually are trapped in a cycle of self-defeating behaviors that perpetuates the deep feelings of despair. Clients can receive respectful support in facing the issues that keep them enslaved by their grief and be freed from the depths of hopelessness.
