Depression is one of the most widespread emotional problems faced by people in today's society, imposing a significant toll on their personal lives, family lives, and work lives. Many people burdened by depression regard it as a sign of weakness and suffer with it privately and in silence. Depression is generally considered a reaction to physical or psychological stress, and any number of stressors can lead to depressive symptoms. These can include personality, environmental, or biomedical factors, i.e. chemical imbalances in the brain, trauma, and/or situational factors. Sometimes illness or certain drugs (including alcohol, prescribed medications, etc.) as well as improper diet and nutrition contribute to depression. Treatment includes identifying and understanding the underpinnings and circumstances of your depression (insight), learning helpful coping skills, and getting extra support so you can feel better and recover.

I have found that people who experience some form of depression respond quite positively to a solution focused or cognitive behavioral approach. Instead of a consistent focus on what makes you depressed, we explore those times where you feel better and more alive. We put the spotlight on that in order to learn how do experience that state more often. I also coordinate with a psychopharmacologist if medication is indicated as well.
