Many of us struggle with periods of depression. We may experience a lack of interest in activities that we once enjoyed participating in, have a lack of appetite or sleep or increased appetite or sleep, lack of energy, experience poor concentration, restlessness, irritability, and hopelessness. This is not all bad if these symptoms do not linger on for long periods of time. With depression I often find that people have reason to be depressed yet seek to get on with their lives too soon. So I help them to "honor" their depression. At the same time, I do not believe it helpful to wait until the depression is over before coaching a client back to living a satisfying life. My approach in the long run is to help the client return to a satisfying life so that the depression will disappear. Also, with mild depression, physical exercise is often very helpful; it produces endorphins. Exercise with a partner is especially helpful.
