Most people, at some point in their lives, experience depression. Our lives become overwhelming to the point that even simple, every day tasks seem difficult to overcome. Counseling provides an outlet for people to express their hurts and pain, allows them to gain insight to where their particular cycle of depression stems from and helps them find a light and hope in an otherwise dark world.

My approach to helping those struggling with depression is to offer a supportive environment of acceptance where one feels free to share their pain. I primarily use a Cognitive/Behavioral approach. In this approach I work with my clients to help them learn how to increase activities that have given them joy, such as calling a love one on the phone, going on a walk or bike ride in nature and decrease activities that make depression worse such as substance use or watching too much TV. I also collaborate with my clients to help them identify and challenge their automatic negative thoughts about themselves, and replace those negative thoughts with positive and adaptive thoughts and beliefs.

In working with depression I offer ways for you to understand the depression and the contributing factors. Together we identify those life factors that have caused the depression and find healthy ways to resolve it. We then reconstruct the thinking, attributes and behaviors associated with the depression. The purpose of this is to have you gain a sense of balance and control in your own life. We then create manageable coping skills that will allow you to identify the triggers and have a working plan to cope with the depression.

Depression can be paralyzing, or it can be like dragging an unnecessary weight around. You may be isolating, less social, low energy, & pessimistic. Fear not, there is help available! Talking to a trained, licensed professional will help. He or she will ask you questions, get to know you, and then help you acquire realistic, practical tools to beat depression, and be happy again. Maybe even happier that ever. A good therapist is trained in active listening to get to know you like other people typically don't. My approach to depression depends greatly on the presenting problem as people become depressed for a variety of situations (anxiety, stress, existential/meaning, grief ). After assessing & evaluating a course of treatment with the client, treatment may involve cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques, Logotherapy to explore life's meaning, or perhaps an exploration of spiritual depression. Of course, if the depression is judged to be major depression referral to a physician's for medical intervention may be explored.

Many of us struggle with periods of depression. We may experience a lack of interest in activities that we once enjoyed participating in, have a lack of appetite or sleep or increased appetite or sleep, lack of energy, experience poor concentration, restlessness, irritability, and hopelessness. This is not all bad if these symptoms do not linger on for long periods of time. However, if these periods of sadness last longer than two weeks one is depressed and this is the time when seeking counseling will be helpful. I help individuals discovers the triggers that cause their depression and teach them healthy coping skills to reduce their symptoms. I help individuals work towards empowerment.

With depression I often find that people have reason to be depressed yet seek to get on with their lives too soon. So I help them to "honor" their depression. At the same time, I do not believe it helpful to wait until the depression is over before coaching a client back to living a satisfying life. My approach in the long run is to help the client return to a satisfying life so that the depression will disappear. Also, with mild depression, physical exercise is often very helpful; it produces endorphins. Exercise with a partner is especially helpful.

Healing from past wounds, identifying false beliefs developed from childhood/life experiences, and working through the accompanying grief/loss will be the key to finding healing and freedom from depression and discouragement. As we do this, we will also work to replace these hurts and wounds with the truths about who the person was created to be, so that the client finds contentment and joy once again, sometimes despite the circumstances.

The Experiential model for working with and through depression is focused on the treatment outcome of developing client's strength, autonomy, capacity for change, and self-compassion. The experiential process is structured for the client to gain awareness to thoughts, feelings, and behaviors separately but at the same time in the present "here and now" activity or task; the client is thereby able to recognize a holistic sense of "being" in the moment and improve emotional control of negative emotions like anger, shame, and fear.
