Many of us struggle with periods of depression. We may experience a lack of interest in activities that we once enjoyed participating in, have a lack of appetite or sleep or increased appetite or sleep, lack of energy, experience poor concentration, restlessness, irritability, and hopelessness. This is not all bad if these symptoms do not linger on for long periods of time. However, if these periods of sadness last longer than two weeks one is depressed and this is the time when seeking counseling will be helpful. I help individuals discovers the triggers that cause their depression and teach them healthy coping skills to reduce their symptoms. I help individuals work towards empowerment.

With depression I often find that people have reason to be depressed yet seek to get on with their lives too soon. So I help them to "honor" their depression. At the same time, I do not believe it helpful to wait until the depression is over before coaching a client back to living a satisfying life. My approach in the long run is to help the client return to a satisfying life so that the depression will disappear. Also, with mild depression, physical exercise is often very helpful; it produces endorphins. Exercise with a partner is especially helpful.

In working with depression I offer ways for you to understand the depression and the contributing factors. Together we identify those life factors that have caused the depression and find healthy ways to resolve it. We then reconstruct the thinking, attributes and behaviors associated with the depression. The purpose of this is to have you gain a sense of balance and control in your own life. Some people put off going to therapy for depression because they assume all the therapist will do is just listen (or they have already had a therapist you did just that!). While it is helpful to have someone to be able to talk to about what is bothering you, I am trained to listen for what may be maintaining your depression and will give you tools for you to be able to decrease your depression, with some finding relief within a few sessions. My approach to working with depression involves focusing on the interaction of the body and mind, changing thoughts that are contributing to depression, and exploring how your interactions with others may be affecting your mood.
