If you haven't experienced depression at some point in your life, you are either a master of denial or have been asleep at the wheel. Depression is the result of the repressed anger we feel towards ourselves that give rise to shame, guilt, and despair. When we experience feelings of rejection, abandonment or exploitation they are often so painful that we cannot tolerate facing them. We become defensive, touchy, irritable. Effective therapy makes it possible for us face ourselves in ways which we have previously avoided or denied. Depression constricts our range of emotion. We go about our lives in half-hearted ways. We lack the ability to fully engage or fully commit. The key is reconnect!
Kathryn Kinsey, LCSW
Depression affects up to twenty percent of us at some time in our lives. At times the cause may be situational and the resolution involves clarifying options, getting support from the significant people in our lives, and understanding that "this too shall pass.". This may be supplemented with relaxation exercises, meditative practices, and medications if necessary. More chronic depressions may need longer term counseling, collaboration with the primary care physician or referral for medications to a psychiatrist. Some useful adjuncts may include progressive relaxation, family counseling, exercise, and spiritual guidance.

Whether it is hitting you this once or has haunted you pervasively, depression is an experience that can quietly devastate your life. The clouds of hopelessness and helplessness may shroud everything.
It is in this place of not wanting to move, to be seen, or to act in anyway that it becomes most critical to find help.
I have never met anyone in my personal or professional life who was undeserving or beyond help. There is always a cause for this feeling that, once identified and targeted, can be addressed effectively. Often, there is more than relief around the corner, but in fact a deeper sense of appreciation and satisfaction awaiting you.
You are welcome to land here, to fall apart
Esther Lerman, M.A., M.F.T.
Depression can have many different sources: isolation, unresolved loss, unconscious anger turned against the self, feelings of shame, inadequacy and low self-esteem. It is sometimes experienced as a kind of deadness or emptiness, an absence of feeling. Therapy offers you the opportunity to get to the bottom of what is troubling you, to find your way to solutions. By talking through your issues and feelings you know what you need to do to change and you have support for taking the steps to make the change happen. Everyone needs to feel heard and understood, to feel empathy for their suffering, in order to do this. I offer this empathy, support and guidance to you.
Robert Hardman, MA, MDIV
Everyone experiences disappointments and discouragements in life. Broken relationships, shattered dreams, loss of jobs, homes, relationship partners, chronic illness or pain they can all lead to depression. The task of a therapist is, first to listen caringly and carefully to assist a client become aware of the cause of depression and to assist in discovering a way to cope life's difficulties in a helpful way. At times this mean, taking a fearless inventory of one's way of looking at and dealing with life situations, becoming realistic about one's actual life situation accompanied by making cognitive and behavioral changes and at times seeking medical help.
Karen Nemrow, MA, MFT
People come to therapy for many reasons Often it is hard to figure out. What i hear most often is "I just don't feel good". Depression feels like a cloud hanging over you and you just cant figure out how to get it off. The therapeutic relationship can help you uncover and work through the issues and feelings associated with depression. I am very interactive when working with depression and will help you start talking your way through the fog. I combine talking, breathing, sand and art to help you begin to heal. We will build a bridge from where you are now to where you may want to be. Feelings need room to be explored and worked through in a safe, healing environment.

Behind all depression and anxiety, lies a deep opportunity to contact lost or dis-connected pieces of the self that may lay outside of our awareness, which then results in these symptoms which can make it extremely challenging to function in day to day tasks like paying bills, going to work and dealing with human relationships. it can feel unmanageable. The good this is, there is hope. For over 20 years I have supported people in consciously moving through the humanness of depression into greater awareness, recognizing and grieving the lost and missing pieces of self, and renewing trust, faith, and hope in t he process of life. Clients report feeling more ease, relaxation & growth in life

A combination of individual and group therapy is the treatment of choice for the person suffering from long standing depression. Matching the individual with the appropriate constellation of members is a skill in and of itself. Depression is often experienced as an alienated and isolated existence. Being able to present oneself genuinely is a real gift for the person as well as his/her group.
Dan Quinn, Psy.D.
If you're stuck, it can feel like your own mind is against you, pulling you down into a swamp. It usually has to do with imagining that you are helpless - and while it might seem that you ARE helpless, it's really important to get in to talk to a therapist to get past that idea, and get moving forward again. Let's break it down into manageable pieces and get you activated and engaged in life.
Larry Lease, JD, MA, LMFT
As a licensed therapist with 30 years experience I help people who suffer from depression connected with relationship difficulties. When we become overwhelmed with painful emotions such as sadness, fear, hurt or humiliation, one response is to retreat into depression. In therapy we can learn more effective responses, so that we can experience our whole range of emotions and be more fully alive with the people who matter to us.
Kelly Wilcoxson, , MA, MFT Intern #66475
As your therapist, I witness the stuck places and the wonderful places you can go to. I'll help you slow down inside and check those places out more and explore the experience of them. I'll guide you and help you. Most of the times people find that relying on their knowledge of their behaviors alone haven't gotten them very far out of those stuck places. So, together in therapy we'll get under that piece to help you create a change. The sessions I hold are practical, warm, and interactive. I encourage bravery, humor, authenticity, and personal empowerment. I support you exactly where you are, and gently but firmly guide you to where you'd like to be.

My approach to treating depression is based on the nature, level and depresssion history of a particular client. In addition to providing safety for a person to express themselves freely, we build internal and external resources, e.g. lifestyle and social support, exercise. I also teach mindfulness and sensorimotor skills that interrupt the depressive patterns that take place in mind and body. Gradually changing self defeating relationship patterns can also relieve depression. A majority of my clients find depression decreases significantly with these methods. For some, depressive symptoms may be more entrenched, in which case medication has been used as an additional support.
Claire Stone, LMFT
Do you feel like you are dragging yourself through life and just can't get your energy and interest back? You could be suffering from depression, which can be a debilitating dis-ease. I will help you to discover feelings that could be underneath your depression that need to be processed. We will also look at your negative thinking that contributes to your feeling down. Setting manageable goals, expressing your wants and needs, increasing social interactions, and exercise are also helpful ways to alleviate depression. We will work together to find out what is specifically driving your depression, and explore what methods work best for you.

Depression has a way of directing your thoughts and feelings to the heavy and dark so that it becomes difficult to see the light in your life. Daily life seems to require more effort than you have energy for. You may have noticed how you’re no longer interested in or enjoy doing things you used to do and have withdrawn from friends and family. Maybe you’re sleeping too little or too much. Or, you don’t feel good about who you are. To help you invest in yourself and reclaim your life we’ll explore how your negative thought and behavior patterns impact your sense of life.
We’ll explore the impact of holding on to past and present grudges and resentments, having difficulty setting clear and....

Depression is a serious issue. I know it is difficult to seek help when you are depressed and you probably feel hopeless that there is any help at all. I provide a safe place to help you understand and deal with the depression and together we will create a plan to help you feel better.
Mark Hirschfield
Depression can be a very debilitating condition which for many therapists is difficult to work with. I have a great deal of success and extensive experience working with depression. I first asses the clients' condition and then aid them with behavioral and cognitive techniques which will swiftly begin to free them from their inertia. If necessary we will then work with the underlying issues to hold these new found positive feelings in a permanent place.

Depression is usually very treatable. As an Oakland depression therapist, I help people with depression work through their pain and take steps to feel better again. I use traditional talk therapy techniques as well as empirically proven therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness based therapy, and EMDR. Exciting new research is proving the effectiveness of combining meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, for depression, and I am excited to offer this therapy to my clients. As a somatic therapist, I am also able to help you work with your body to change the physical symptoms of depression. I help adults & children heal and recover from depressive disorders.

I help people who are depressed learn how to lift the depression and improve the quality of their lives. Please contact me if you would like to talk to me about how you may get some help with whatever is going on in your life, lift your depression and find hope for a better life again.
Lawrence Tunis, Ed.D, LMFT
I am of the opinion that feelings of depression are most offten associated with unexpressed or unacknowledged deep-seated feelings of anger that we hold on to for one reason or other. Because every human behavior has a purpose, holding on to one's anger in the form of depression has some "secondary" gain for the individual, perhaps putting one in the victim's role and otherwise allowing us to feel a sense of control in situtions where we may feel out of control. However, there is a great price to pay for this in terms of a loss of aliveness and joy in one's life. I help people who are stuck in their depression to get to the other side.
C. Girvani Leerer, Ph.D.
Depression can express in many ways - low energy, sadness and tearfulness, unresolved grief, irritability and anger, loss of enjoyment and interest, sleep problems, under- and over-eating, and substance abuse. Depression is very common - if you think you may be depressed, you probably are. You can suffer from chronic low-level depression, as well as from more severe forms of depression.
I work with you to discover the root causes of your depression, to heal old wounds, and change old limiting beliefs that contribute to your depression. Using a combination of treatments, together we can get you back on track so you can experience more joy, success, and fulfillment in your life.
Jane Steinberg, MFT
Depression has many faces, but it often feels like a cloud of darkness has descended over the world and the light cannot get through. You may have lost someone or something deeply important to you and the world has no meaning any more. You have lost touch with your deepest self and cannot find your way. Together, we will work to help you explore the source of your depression, move through and resolve all of your feelings and experiences, and access what has joy, meaning and purpose for you on the way towards creating the life that you most deeply want.
Cressida Forester, Psy.D.
Maybe you're depressed and nobody even knows your feeling that way; or everyone thinks they know, and they're telling you how to get over it, and to hurry. That advice usually backfires, and makes you feel worse. Recovery from depression is possible, but takes its own time. I am not afraid of sitting with you and those bleak, empty, hopeless feelings, whether you can talk about them or not. While I can certainly give advice if that's useful, I'd rather help you understand what's causing your depression and help you feel through it in your own way - the way it actually works. Gradually, with some ups and downs, you can get a better grip on your life and relationships, and feel better.
Mey Saephan, MS
Depression can grow on you. Once you experience it, you must find a way out of it or it becomes you. Depression can develop because of loss, trauma, chemical imbalance, or chronic pain and other reasons. Some people believe they have been depressed all their lives. I will help you figure out what is feeding it and how you can get out from under it. We will explore the best way to treat your depression. That includes an assessment, psychotherapy with or without medication or Lifespan Integration to help you out of your depression.
