Depression is painful, debilitating, and isolating. Often depressed individuals hide their depression, even from their closest friends or family members because they wrongly feel ashamed and that no one will understand. I do understand, and I care very much. I will deeply listen and respond to your struggles, emotions and fears. I will be compassionate and supportive as we work together to understand the deep causes of your depression. Often people are unaware that their current depression was triggered by a past painful experience or childhood trauma. I will be responsive and sensitive to your needs while being available to you- even between appointments- by phone or email.

Sometimes people feel depresed and can atribute it to stressful events that have occured, other times people can't quite put their finger on why they feel depressed, they just know they're not happy, feel unmotivated, and in some cases hopeless and helpless. What we now know about neuroscience helps us understand how and why depression occurs. I will help you determine whether your depression can be improved through talk therapy combined with some changes to your daily routine or whether a clinical depression has set in that may respond well to medication too. I have a wonderful, caring Doctor I work with who will assess clinical depression and offer recommendaitons if necessary.

Depression is a debilitating and difficult problem to deal with, because the very nature of depression can stop you from seeking help. My approach with clients living with depression is not to seek out root causes, but to attempt to break the cycle of depression through small manageable tasks. As a client you will feel safe enough to try new things in order to make living with your depression, easier and more manageable. You can get control of your life and learn to live and laugh again.

People may medicate their depression with TV, alcohol, food, isolation, or excessive sleep. One definition of depression is "anger turned inward." Talking with a psychologist is one of the best methods to understand your down moods, unusual thoughts, and self-defeating beliefs. Friends may say, "Get over it" about your jealousy toward your sister or your sadness over your girlfriend who texted "it's over" 3 months ago. If you are on medication for already-diagnosed depression, therapy is important to bring new ideas into your brain. If you are considering medication, start with talk therapy. Don't keep waiting for "it" to go away. What's at the bottom of your depression?

Depression is seen by some as a biochemical imbalance that is genetically transferred to the individual and can only be treated through medication. This might be part of the picture, but also a depressive, negative style of thinking can result in changes in the brain that bring about this unhealthy biochemical imbalance - and psychological treatment can change the thinking style that leads to this imbalance, rendering the individual to be free of reliance on medication and overall improved life that lasts on it's own merits.
