Depression hits different people different ways. Effective depression treatment works with individual experience. What are you going through? Many people battling depression experience sadness, hopelessness, and/or feelings of worthlessness. Some sleep too much, finding it difficult to get out of bed; others have difficulty sleeping, tossing and turning with insomnia. Some eat too much; others lose their appetite completely. And on from there... Call to discuss what you're experiencing and how therapy may begin to help you feel better.

Depression can have roots in the earliest years of our lives due to hurts at a sensitive age, or can result from current experiences of traumas, losses, and disappointments. Often these two origins dovetail, with current stressors resurrecting earlier levels of depression. A good therapy will take seriously the level and personal experience of depression. Clear introspection into the cause, development of truly effective coping strategies, and support for a process of working through depression is the basis of my therapeutic approach.
Trish Phillips, M.A., MFT

We will also explore deeper reasons that could be contributing to your feelings. You deserve a life that is fulfilling and rewarding.

Discover the cause of depression and what to do about it. Many times people feel depressed because they feel that their life should look different than it does in the moment. Eris Huemer joins with her clients by helping them explore a preferred future for themselves. She takes her clients through a process that helps them change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. The emphasis here is on finding solutions to current problems and focusing on future wellness rather than past hurts. This is not to say that the past is ignored but the main emphasis is on teaching new skills and creating the life that you want and deserve.

When you feel depressed even a phone call seems like a difficult, if not impossible, undertaking. When you feel depressed nothing makes too much sense anymore, you're overwhelmed by any task in front of you, you'd like to be left alone, you either eat too much or too little, you find days are all the same, there is no joy or pleasure in people or events you used to enjoy. You're already a changed person and don't really know how and why to get back to your old self. Most definitely, you need to call me so I can show you how to cope with your painful condition and with a reality that above all seems overwhelming. Yes, there is a solution oriented therapy that may be exactly what you need.

Freud said that depression was "anger turned inward." When one feels depressed he/she has often lost touch with not only the anger that is inside but many other emotions. Depression is a state of shutdown. A gloomy mood takes the place of the feelings that have not been felt and experienced. This is one of my areas of specialization. I treat depression by building the client's bond and trust with me and guiding them inward to survey the emotional landscape that has been abandoned. We then trace their feelings to key events in their lives and connect the two. Grieving is a large part of working with depression. In time, your world view begins to change from grim to hopeful. Light appears!
Deryl Goldenberg, Ph.D.
Depression can take over. We can turn unexpressed anger against ourselves. We can avoid confronting our obstacles and challenges in work or in personal relatiionships, and then we are left feeling discouraged, deflated and victimized. Energy comes from learning how to deal with life and the daily challenges it presents, navigating relationships and learning how to use our strength, our smarts, our ability to exert ourselves to overcome problems. We will look into how one got nto the depression, how you are keeping yourself there, and how to find manageable steps to get out. Support and dealing with one's self critical thoughts, disarming them, and taking corrective action works.
Ron Jackson, MS
Listening to what's not there? What have you lost? What do you believe is being taken from you? Is your depression chronic, situational or acute? These answers guide us to how to best treat these issues. Depression is the common cold of todays culture. We need to rebuild the inner resources to survive and thrive in work, marriage and play. Some times depression also need medication to recovery. I support the role that medicine can play in recovery.

Are you feeling sad, worried, overwhelmed and hopeless? Does life seem to be a constant struggle?
Depression can rob you of happiness, self-esteem, energy, motivation and interest in life. You can begin to believe things that just aren't true; that you're a failure, that the suffering will go on forever and that you’ll never be happy again.
It doesn’t have to be like that!
You can discover new skills to overcome life's challenges and difficulties, solve problems more effectively, interact more positively with others, and start getting more of what you want out of life.
There is hope! And I'd really like to help you start feeling better.
Craig Clark, Ph.D.
If you're feeling depressed, you're not alone. Roughly 10% of the population is depressed. Depression and anxiety are the most common symptoms treated by psychologists, and virtually everyone experiences these feelings with varying intensity throughout their life. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of effective treatments available, beginning with an exploration of the causes of your feelings with a trusted psychologist.

Research shows that approximately 20% of people suffer from symptoms of depression at sometime during their life. Some incidents of depression are considered "situational" (caused by the circumstances in which you find yourself) while others are often the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. Regardless of the cause, most people can benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy -- a therapy that focuses on our thoughts. It is believed that our thoughts create our feelings (the way we interpret what something means causes us to feel joy, anger, jealousy, etc.) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used to identify and change the nonproductive thoughts. It works!
Erin Sumner, MS, MFT
When someone is suffering from depression, they first need to be assessed to see if there could be a medical cause or chemical imbalance. "Depression is rage turned inward." When a person becomes exhausted by the negative thoughts in their mind, they will sink into a depression. I teach clients how to identify negative thinking and replace this with a healthier pattern of thinking. Most people with depression also have relationship problems and sometimes a history of trauma. All these issues need to be addressed.

Depression is not something you can just "snap out of". Feeling sadness from time to time is a normal part of life. Depression is different from normal sadness in that it engulfs your day-to-day life interfering with your ability to work, eat, study, sleep and have fun. I will help you to identify the underlying factors that contribute to your depression. Through exploration we will discover and understand how your behavior and mood are affected by unresolved issues. Therapy will uncover patterns of behavior and feelings that stem from past experiences and unrecognized feelings will become apparent.

When treating depression, I employ cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) therapy which is empirically validated in research studies to help people with depression. By modifying routines and behavior and learning how to challenge dysfunctional thoughts, clients are helped to improve mood in a relatively short time. This approach is collaborative, active, and supportive. Clients are usually asked to keep records, complete worksheets, test new behaviors, run experiments, and report back on the outcome.

Life can be very stressful these days. Cell phones, I Pads, smart phones, e mail, social networks all are fun and wonderful but they also bring with them higher expectations from work, family, friends and even ourselves. Our world keeps speeding up and the pressures can be great. Depression as an outgrowth of the stresses and pressures that surround us is becoming increasing common and a part of each of our lives.
Most of us will experience depression at one or more points in our lives. Medication can help but is usually not the long term answer. We will work to identify the problems, find solutions, set goals and work toward minimizing the causes and find more peace and calm.

Depression is a complex condition that involves changes in mood, behavior and thinking. It can effect our most important personal and work related relationships. Physically, it can interrupt our sleep, appetite and energy level. Sometimes, a medical solution is needed and other times a psychological approach is best while other times a combination of both is the optimal treatment. As a psychotherapist with 28 years experience, I have helped many people overcome their depression through proven treatments that change the patterns of thinking, acting, and relating that tend to maintain depressive moods. Psychotherapy can greatly benefit the person seeking relief from this condition.
Robert Puff, M.A., M.Div., Ph.D.
There are two emotions which can be utilized in the process of healing from trauma: anger and sadness. Sadness can be a very effective vehicle for healing. The only problem with sadness is that it is such a short leap from there to depression. Sadness heals; depression does not.
Depression can keep a person stuck in the same place for years without any progress. You must be very careful not to fall into depression when you decide to explore your feelings about the negative experiences of your life. Unfortunately, many people find the difference between sadness and depression to be obscure at best, and they often vacillate between the two. We encourage you to be very careful of depression becau....

You can fight depression by exploring how your present emotions relate to past experiences. These insights, gained under the guidance of a caring professional, can deliver release, increase your understanding, build your self-esteem. In parallel, you can learn ways to examine your thoughts regarding negativity, distortions etc. This helps you create more positive and realistic thoughts, moving away from having no control towards taking control. In addition, relaxation techniques can bring you a sense of balance and peace. If poor exercise, nutrition, sleep and social support contribute to your depression, I'll guide you to make changes and keep track.

I don't believe you are defined by your depression and I can help you find ways to change your relationship with depression and negative thinking so that the rut doesn't start to feel like quick sand. Depression does not have a single cause. Often it is a result of a complex of factors including biological, social, psychological, and physical. Depression can be a reaction to loss, the result of internalized rage, a result of life long negative thinking, early childhood abuse and/or trauma. Some people are genetically predisposed to experience depression. The first step in treatment is assessment and diagnosis. Treatment of depression is not a one size fits all. Your depression is different than the person down the street. The good news is that depression can be treated. Don't wait any longer; you do not have to suffer.

So few people really know how it feels to be depressed. They try and identify with the depressed person by telling them of their own experiences, when all they are typically describing is "feeling blue." And, they try to tell the person what s/he should do to get out of their "funk;" leaving the depressed person feeling even more lonely, helpless, powerless and discouraged. Using psychotherapy and/or neurofeedback training, I can help you get to the source of your depression, and regain renewed hope and control over your life.

Depression is a difficult thing to experience. Perhaps life hasn't gone the way you had hoped and planned; sometimes disappointments becomes too great, and sometimes we can't seem to find what we're looking for in life. Sometimes depression has been with us for years, and sometimes it is brought about by a difficult experience, or series of experiences. The best thing you can do is find a safe place to share these feelings and talk about what you're experiencing. Putting feelings to words, and working through those feelings with a counselor, will help you get out of that stuck place. My office serves the cities of Long Beach CA and Orange County CA. I'm here to help.

Depression affects every area of an individual's daily life and can be devastating. My general philosophy and treatment includes a holistic approach. This means that I gather as much information as possible from my client so that I understand all the contributing factors to the depression as well as the anxiety that may accompany depression. I work from a cognitive behavioral approach to understand how the messages one gives to him/herself contributes to the depression and anxiety. I work with the client on developing healthy behaviors that contribute to restful sleep, relaxation, positive self-talk, and physical and emotional health.

I practice a type of therapy for depression called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which research has shown to be especially effective with depressive disorders. Using CBT, we work together to discover underlying beliefs (which we call cognitive distortions) that are causing or contributing to your depressive symptoms. Once identified, we then use a variety of techniques to help you correct those thinking patterns that are causing you difficulty. We measure progress constantly so that we can try new techniques if needed, to help you feel better.

Depression is difficult to deal with at any stage of life, however if left untreated it can affect a person's relationships, job, career and family. I offer a safe and supportive environment in which to heal the life experiences, beliefs and underlying emotions that have caused the depression in the first place. You can have joy and meaning again. Don't let depression rob you of the life you would like to have.
Cindy Kludt, M.A., LMFT
Since one of my expertise is working with grief and loss, I often see people who come because they are "depressed" after a loss. Some people are given medication at the time of the loss to help them cope. I have found that many people in my practice who feel depressed are actually suffering from unresolved grief. Once the loss is dealt with and properly grieved (the allowance of the grieving emotions, which includes anger, sadness, guilt, regret, etc.), the depression lessens. If we see depression as "repressing" emotions, then the way to help one become less depressed is for them to learn how to properly deal with their emotions. I refer to a Psychiatrist for meds if it is indicated.

My belief is that depression is born from unexplored feelings intersecting with past and present life events. I gently guide clients to deeply explore core belliefs and emotions that are impacting how they view themselves and the world around them. Depression and Anxiety are the number one mental health issues in the United States. Most people who suffer from depression don't get help for it, instead they suffer alone. Rather medicating it away, therapy can help you understand the roots of the depression and/or anxiety and learn specific tools to find relief from it. You don't have to continue living with sadness.

When I work with depression, I help the client understand and accept themselves by uncovering trauma and anger issues that have not been healed. Then, I use a series of cognitive-behavioral techniques that help change the way they think about themselves. This process is very effective in increasing self-esteem, reducing powerlessness and lifting the cloud of depression.

Depression is like a thief who comes in the night and steals your sense of wellbeing. Numbness is often a key characteristic . I see depression as an unwelcome visitation. First, we'll explore how depression keeps its hold on you; often allies such as perfectionism, a critical inner voice, or a perceived failure to live up to some socially constructed norm are instrumental in keeping depression in place. We'll also look at ways you may be already waging a fight against depression, and evaluate which strategies are helpful and which ones actually increase depression's hold. Together, we'll construct your path out of depression back into a life of vibrancy and promise.

Working with Rich HIrschkoff, MFT, one feels safe "being" with and sharing their pain, and will benefit from the cognitive behavioral learning of more effective coping skills. Depression comes in many forms and for many different reasons. Even those who care about you may not truly understand how crippling depression can be, which can make it worse by causing you to feel isolated. Our work together will examine the unique reasons for your depression and collaborate on the best way to better cope with or work through it. There is always hope, even if depression begs to convince you otherwise.

I specialize in helping people who struggle with never feeling quite “enough" and want to stop judging themselves so harshly. I am passionate about helping people discover self-acceptance. I personally understand the torment of living with an inner critical voice. For years, I lived with the fear that if I did not appear “perfect” I would disappoint others and be rejected. I learned to care and nurture the parts of me that I deemed unworthy of love. The liberation was tremendous. From my own experience and my clients' successes, know that you can experience greater intimacy in your relationships, develop self-compassion and enjoy your whole self – imperfections and all.

Depression is far more common than has been generally thought. Folks find themselves feeling hopeless, unable to concentrate, lacking initiative, having difficulty making decisions, trouble sleeping etc. Depression involves a slowing down of the entire human organism as well as lowered self-esteem. Often our dreams and images can lead us to discover the deeper meaning of the depression. Therefore sometimes depression can be a pathway to self-discovery. As we explore together the underlying concerns, I listen in a way that provides the client with clarity, offer guidance without imposing decisions, accept the client as they are, without making judgments, as they move forward in achieving

Research shows that Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment (sometimes in conjunction with medication), for Clinical Depression. I was originally trained in CBT. Also, I have found that other modalities, such as Voice Dialogue, Assertiveness Training, & Acceptance & Commitment Therapy can help. Finally, a Mindfulness practice helps & a good exercise & nutrition program are crucial.

The world does not look the same and nothing seems to matter when you're dealing with depression. It takes all the energy you have just to get out of bed in the morning. You know life has so much more to offer but at the moment you may feel very hopeless and helpless with the situation. You do not have to continue to live that way and you certainly do not have to deal with it alone. Dr. Pham's expertise in depression will help get you out of the hopeless, dark days so you may lead a happy and fulfilling life.

Again deep breathing is the key here. The inhale will energize you and the exhale will relax you. Low energy is a key symptom of depression. Also hopelessness and helplessness. Changing the way you breathe will directly change your nervous system and change the way you feel physiologically. It will also change the way you perceive reality. If you have clinical depression (not situational) then medication in addition to psychotherapy may be advised. Mostly I help people get off medication. Exercise is as effective in treating depression as medication.

Depression is a symptom that may be the result of a cluster of unexpressed emotions that we carry in our body. Over time, we weave narratives around these emotions as they are deposited in our bodies. They take on a life of their own, creating body sensations, physical pains and even other symptoms. When we continually revisit the same “bad story,” we feel stuck in it. If the depression is an underlying symptom of a trauma that is wreaking havoc on the spirit, we partner up in therapy on the magical journey of gently uncovering the roots of the “bad story” and thereby releasing and discharging that which no longer holds true- allowing for the space in your spirit to create new stories.

Situational Depression and Clinical Depression need different approaches. The hardest thing for a therapist to do is encourage someone who is depressed they need to take action. The hardest thing for a client to hear is they need to take action. Together let's explore how taking action would be beneficial and healthy for you. Let's figure out if your depression is situational and what we can do to lift the depression and live. Survival is okay but living is much better. You will gain important insight from your struggle and possibly be a stronger person in the future.

Depression is often a state of confusion resulting from the lack of permission or guidance in processing difficult situations. An opportunity to work through past trauma can help lift depression so there is a greater emotional freedom to move forward and make choices in life. This support to process needs to be kind and understanding while providing a bit of a "push" to find the courage to face whatever scary feelings might be hidden away.
Rebecca Kahane, MA, LMFT
Loss, family conflict, health issues, relationship struggles, money issues, hereditary components etc., all can contribute to feelings of depression. If you are feeling alone, isolated, sad, or experiencing physical symptoms, mood swings, insomnia, or weight changes then you are most likely suffering from symptoms of depression. I will help you to develop coping tools and resources to overcome your depression by creating a depression recovery plan, changing negative thinking, developing healthy life-style habits, stress reduction exercises, cultivating support from family and friends, and learning stress reduction methods.

Depression is mainly a problem of lack of expression. What is held inside is negatively judged to the point where everything seems heavy and hopeless. What lifts depression is movement: 1) movement of talking about your feelings and what matters to you 2) movement of being out in the world: exercising, doing active things and connecting with others 3) movement of the spirit where you learn compassion for yourself and others. You realize we all have difficult times and dark days. You rediscover and acknowledge your strengths and what inspires you. Focusing on acceptance, appreciation, and gratitude, lightens you. I'd love to be your guide as you learn to love yourself and find joy in living.
Taji Huang, Ph.D.
Psychological treatment of depression (psychotherapy) assists the depressed individual in several ways. Supportive counseling helps ease the pain of depression, and addresses the feelings of hopelessness that accompany depression. Cognitive therapy changes the pessimistic ideas, unrealistic expectations, and overly critical self-evaluations that create depression and sustain it. Cognitive therapy helps the depressed person recognize which life problems are critical, and which are minor. It also helps him/her to develop positive life goals, and a more positive self-assessment.
Carl H. Shubs, Ph.D.
We all feel down sometimes. Real depression is when we can’t get back up. Or it’s when we do so only after great effort, and even then it’s not all the way back. If sadness, hopelessness, and helplessness get in your way, that’s depression. Even mild or periodic depression can interfere in your life. It can also increase conflicts at work and in your relationships. Therapy helps, even without medication. Some people may benefit from medication, but that’s on an individual basis, and research shows that medication works best when it’s combined with therapy. We’ll examine what causes the depression, what you’ve tried, and what else can be done. Depression doesn’t have to stop your living.
