People experience depression for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it has to do with failed or challenging relationships. Other times it might be related to some things from their past that haven't really had the chance to heal. There are also times when someone simply isn't sure why they feel the way they do. Whatever the source we will work together to understand the origin and come up with tangible, reasonable ways to address it to help you to feel better and move forward in your life.

Counseling has been shown to significantly help with depression. Many people who are depressed have distorted thinking. They think they are worthless for no reason. That is a brain trick. I work with the client to identify these tricks and develop strategies to help them feel better. Knowledge is power. Once you understand how your brain is functioning, we can work together to change it. Sometimes the cause of this type of faulty thinking is events that have happened in your childhood or situations going on currently in your life. Once we identify what is going on, together we can develop strategies to help you feel happy and more productive

There are many approaches used to treat depression. One effective treatment for some clients is cognitive therapy, where the client is asked to evaluate their thoughts and feelings. Another is cognitive behavioral therapy, where the client and therapist identify the connection of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The goal of both of these methods would be to learn how to change the thoughts in order to change the feelings of depression. Narrative therapy can also be used which allows the client to use story telling to decrease depression. Christian Biblical Counseling can be used to treat depression for those clients who wish to incorporate their Christian beliefs. Others are available.

It can be difficult to diagnose mood disorders in children and adolescents, especially because they are not always able to express their feelings. Several of the most common mood disorders in children are major depression, bipolar disorder and disruptive mood dysregulation. Psychoeducation about the disorder, for you and your child, and cognitive behavioral therapy can teach your child to manage emotional ups and downs.
