Depression is a feeling of hopelesness. It can distort the way you see yourself, your life, and those around you. People who have depression usually see everthing with a more negative attitude, unable to imagine that any problem or situation can be solve in a positive way. They become "stuck." They say things like: "If I could have, I would have, I didn't, so I can't. They know more about what they do not want than about what they do want. Strategies to help lift depression include: (1) Finding the belief behind a disturbing thought. (2) If a thought is troubling, judging it on relevance rather than "truth." (3) If it isn't useful, it is irrrelevant.

Depression can be debilitating. It can be caused by an external event or can seem to come out of the blue with no cause whatsoever. The pain goes way beyond sadness and unless a person has experienced this, they can not understand. I have experienced this crippling kind of depression and I know that you can not just "snap out of it". There are many different treatments for depression and I stay current on the most recent research. Some kinds of treatment you may be familiar with. Others will be new to you. I will work with you to find what works best for you and won't give up until your dark cloud has lifted.
Michael Winters, PhD
Depression can have biological, psychological, social and/or spiritual/existential causes. Likewise, the treatment can focus on a single arena (such as biological factors), or from a combination of arenas. Client's and I work on understanding the arenas from which the depression arose, and then develop a plan to work on those arenas that are impacted. Working in multiple arenas can have the maximum impact

Each one of us may experience depression at some time during our lives. This does not mean that your life is ruined or over. I approach the treatment of depression with formal objective testing, an individualized treatment program, the provision of an individualized depression treatment program. I utilize education and counseling and self help programs to assist individuals to understand their depression and what their choices are about their symptoms. I utilize the "Feeling Good" book by Dr. David Burns as a self help approach that clients can work between their treatment sessions. The main ingredient in the treatment of depression is hope. I have successfully treated many people.

Depression always has pervasive negative effects - many of which are not even recognized by yourself. In the graduate course on diagnosis, I teach students a mnemonic device for identifying depression: CASED PIGS. There are nine symptoms of a major depressive episode and you must meet at least 5 to meet the first of the criteria for such an episode. Depression, in the clinical sense, is connected to various diagnoses. While diagnosing is a starting point, long term or permanent relief is the obvious goal. Talk therapy can be a helpful augmentation to various forms of treatment. My goal for you is to live life with zest. I will humbly and respectfully challenge and encourage you.

Feeling sad, lonely, hopeless, lonely, not motivated or interested in your life or what you're doing?--all are common symptoms of depression. I have found there are common elements--unresolved grief and loss (whether rooted in childhood or adult trauma and poor attachments to parents, undiagnosed and untreated ADHD/learning disabilities, acute loss in adult life--divorce, loss of a parent, faliled pregnancy, among others). Once we identify what are your unique experiences and impact on you, we then are able to resolve these over time. At times, medication may be needed to manage feeling overwhelmed until you are able to manage your feelings and issues--which will happen!

We all experience times when we feel sad or depressed. When we feel this way it can be an important clue that something in our life needs to be changed. Some people have a biological condition which can cause depression. People may experience intense sadness. Others have a Bipolar Disorder and may feel high or even experience difficulty sleeping, anxiety and racing thoughts. We help you explore what was going on in your life when your depression started and unravel the reasons for your symptoms. In some cases medication may be needed. If necessary, we will collaborate with you and your doctor to help you to stabilize your mood, increase your confidence and work towards a happier future.

I carefully assess the depth of depression that a person is dealing with and the context within which the depression is occurring. I am very respectful about clients' feelings about medication and will spend a lot of time exploring a variety of interventions that are not medicinal. I will explore a client's diet, drinking habits, exercise patterns and also the emotional environment that they currently have at work and in their family. If appropriate we may use meditation as part of our overall treatment. We over the course of time will explore the types of attitudes that may be contributing to the depression and ways of successfully moving from negative to positive experience.
Kathy Pardue, MA, LPC
In therapy, I help clients identify the source of depression as situational, chemical, or both. Chronic stress can deplete serotonin in the brain, and healing involves cognitive therapy (evaluating what you are "thinking" and what you are "doing") and possibly medication. When you're in a dark cave, you need someone to come in and sit with you about the problems. It's hard to get out because you're in it. Clients feel improvement in mood as they narrate their thoughts and feelings in circumstances. We generate a counseling plan together to help redirect focus and energy to more productive options.
Megan Pollock, M.S., LPC
Depression is a very real experience. It can present itself in thoughts, feelings, and even our physical experience. There are ways to combat depression, taking control of your experience back and helping you to have the life you want to live. Megan also believes in the power of therapy in conjunction with medication when it is needed. Discussing active steps that clients can take to limit the power of their depression is the foundation for Megan's work in this area. Then, once the depression is managed, other steps can be taken to hopefully eliminate it from your life.

Depression hurts. Depression is unbearable. Depression is experienced at the physical level, the emotional level and at the soul level. Depression has a serious message for us.
