The Anxiety and Depression group is structured to offer a safe environment for members to give and receive support and validation, and to learn new coping skills. The group begins with a structured check-in to allow each member to inform the group of current struggles and accomplishments they have recently encountered. The remainder of the group will be used for discussion and learning new coping skills. There is a different topic of discussion each week, with the opportunity for the group to bring up topics they would find helpful for discussion. The goal of the group is to develop positive coping skills, give mutual support and validation, and learn to manage symptoms more effectively.

Sometimes in the midst of depression it is hard to see how negative thinking is effecting our mood. Is the glass always half empty or half full? Does the depression go back to unresolved childhood issues? I will work with clients to see how they can make some changes in their mood with cognitive therapy and EMDR. Sometimes old unfinished pain from our past is keeping us stuck in the present.

We all feel sad or discouraged at times. However, sometimes these feelings persist for months, or are so intense that it is a daily struggle to wake up, shower, and actively participate in life. You may feel hopeless, that there is no meaning to life, and cut off contact from your loved ones. There is no single 'cause' of depression and others may become frustrated your failed attempts at getting better. Our work together can identify the many factors contributing to low mood, change unhelpful patterns of thinking or behaving that contribute to depression, increase self esteem and empowerment, and identify a balance between your self-care and various life commitments.

In my work with depression, I have found that it's often like a big, thick lens that distorts the worldview of the person I'm working with. Along with the distortion is a draining away of energy, motivation, and hope. I help the person see this lens, to understand its impacts, and to identify what he or she really wants in their life (which shows up in their values, hopes, and ideals). The source of the depression may be a specific life event or a pervasive sense of being "not good enough" (usually established in childhood). I often use hypnosis to correct mistaken beliefs behind the sense of unworthiness or to let the sadness go, which has proven to be very effective for powerful healing.

My practice with clients suffering from depression involves identifying the many possible origins of depression, be they genetic, situational, self-belief and/or familial. My work with clients is usually step-wise; helping them find enough difference in their experience to have hope, then building on that experience to create multiple positive and protective factors to encourage further growth. I utilized CBT, Narrative, Schema-focused, Rogerian and Hypnotherapy approaches to help this process occur. I also encourage them to find more ways to care for themselves through moving, eating and sleeping better and healthier diets.
