Depression is one of the most difficult and painful of all human experiences. It robs us of energy, interest and the will to make things better. I will help you work through your experience and explore and change unrealistic, negative thoughts about the situation, future and yourself. We will investigate new skills such as solving problems, thinking realistically and reactivating your life. We will also create a plan for relapse prevention to optimize long-term success.
Linda Tilley, M.Ed, R.Psych.
Often prolonged depression or depression that is resistant to medication is not as much a clinical depression as it is a reaction to a series of environmental or interpersonal situations that leave us feeling chronically helpless with low self-worth. This is especially true when the situations happen during childhood. Moving beyond the helplessness often requires medication but more importantly, an opportunity to understand and process those negative situations. Making sense of what we are feeling helps us to put our experiences in perspective, process and release the lingering emotions related to those experiences, and move on towards a happy and productive life.
John Stevenson, M.A., M.A.C.P.

Depression is often triggered by some experience of loss, e.g. loss of self-esteem, identity, love, meaning/purpose or of someone or something important to us. It may also relate to feeling that something important to us has not yet been attained in our life. My work in alleviating depression involves helping the person to express and come to terms with these losses, to work towards attaining satisfying goals and to help the person work through negative belief patterns around these issues and to learn more positive, constructive ways of thinking. I also work with depression at the feeling and experiential levels.
Steve Jukes, M.Sc. in MFT, R.Psych.
While there are many causes and contributors to depression, a common approach to working with it involves challenging negative thinking. Hurtful or damaging stories we tell ourselves tend to lead to feelings of hopelessness and sadness, which in turn, manifest as depression. At least in part, therapy for depression involves exploring the roots of negative thinking whereby its legitimacy is safely challenged. By undermining these hurtful thoughts, we are more inclined to experience preferred emotions, and a more enjoyable outcome. Clients that engage this process tend to find relief from depressive symptoms and live a more fulfilling life with more options available to them.
Nancy Hurst, Ph.D
Depression can feel like overwhelming sadness, or maybe like you are in a "funk" that you can not get out of. People often start to isolate themselves, and focus on negative thoughts. I offer a warm, safe place to share your feelings, examine your relationships and perceptions that may be contributing to your depression. I introduce concrete suggestions that will help you get your back on track. People frequently feel a sense of relief after sharing their burdens. In discussing experiences people are often able to view themselves differently and gain insight into how they can more effectively deal with situations and relationships.
Serena Leung, R. Psych
Depression is our body mind and soul's way of letting us know that we need rest - that we are overwhelmed and exhausted and change and growth need to happen.
Our culture is focused on productivity and achievements - doing instead of being - which can rob us of our energy and soul connection.
In this we respect the role of our symptoms learn to listen to them inside of simply medicating them away
from a place of restorative rejuvenation we can once again gather our life force and energy to live with vitality!
Arvin Simon, M.Ed., R. Psych.
Depression is a condition that needs to be properly understood before treated. Sources of depression may range from hidden grief to neuro-chemical imbalances. In almost all cases, it is not enough to eliminate the symptoms by drugs. In my therapy, I will help you to understand the origins of your depression and then find unique ways of working with the problem. The treatments I use for depression include: emotion-focused, psychodynamic, humanistic/existential, family systems, spiritual and cognitive-behavioural therapy. There is no set time for depression to be “cured”. My clients usually recover after their stress is removed and they find ways of working towards the goals in their lives.
Tania Jacobs, M.Ed., R.Psych.
I use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help clients clarify patterns of thinking and behavior that are underlying the depressed emotional state. For example, clients may be highly critical and harsh with themselves, which produces a negative spiral into feeling worse. Or, clients may be unable to set appropriate boundaries with others and eventually become unable to manage everyone’s emotions on top of their own. Clients gain insight into why they are feeling the way they are, and often begin to show more compassion towards themselves. They gradually learn how to integrate new solutions and choices into their daily lives in order to feel better.
Laura Kennedy, MA, R. Psych.
Depression can become a heavy weight, dragging down our energy and coloring our perception of our entire world. Life can even seem pointless, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Counselling can help provide essential therapeutic support to heal symptoms of depression. I provide an open and honest space in which to express your thoughts and feelings, understand the roots of the depression, learn effective coping skills to manage and heal symptoms, and regain feelings of hope and pleasure in living.
Beth Murray, R. Psych
I use a Cognitive-Behavioural approach to treating depression, along with a holistic approach of bringing health to the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual realms of a person. Depression affects a person on all these levels and therefore needs to be treated that way. You can expect to learn skills, increase awareness of negative thought patterns and change them, and implement changes to your lifestyle which will help battle depression.
Michael Handman, Ph.D
I accurately diagnose an individual to ascertain whether he/she suffers from Major Depression or from sadness. The treatment plan might be different but the outcome is similar as my goal is to always help the individual resolve the issues that have brought him/her to therapy. The focus is for the client to be able to move on to a healthy, positive and productive way of living.
AnneMarie Whitton, M.Sc. (MFT)
I treat the presentation of depression by exploring the cause of the depression as opposed to attempting to simply suppress the symptoms. I believe it is useful to explore the individual's thinking, behaviour, emotions, relationships, and overall health. An individual's thinking may cause a downward spiral into the darkness of depression. Challenging the thought patterns that become entrenched often causes a major shift in the presenting symptoms. Creating new pathways is possible and often life altering as a new way of being emerges.

Depression is the common cold of psychology. Like anxiety and stress, depression is quite commonly reported by consumers of psychotherapy. I am experienced, comfortable, and patient with treating depression. I am neither strongly opposed nor strongly supportive of pharmacotherapeutics. I engage an approach that is personal-growth-centered and as independent of the medical model as is possible.
Landor Liddell, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Education), Reg. Psych
True clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer. Depending upon the person, depression therapy can involve a number of treatment approaches including exitential psychotherapy, and cognitive affective/beahvioral therepy. If you have mild depression, you may only need one of these treatments. People with more severe depression usually need combination of both treatments. It takes time to feel better, but there are usually day-to-day improvements.
Emma Drebit, MSc. (Marital & Family Therapy), R. Psych
Depression impacts people on many levels and can greatly impact relationships and work performance. Emma explores biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to both the development and the treatment of depression. She uses cognitive behavioural therapy to help people understand how depression affects the way they think, feel, and behave and the impact it has on the body. Emma focuses on improving mood, coping, and resilience, which includes developing more balance and positive thinking patterns, changing negative core beliefs, learning healthy coping strategies, expressing thoughts and feelings in positive ways, and enhancing boundaries, self-esteem and support systems.
Priya Bains, M.A.
Depression is a state that is usually warranted as a result of the situation that we come across. If we allow ourselves to experience and explore our depressive states, our natural tendency is to move out of this state. My approach to working with depression is not to make clients feel better immediately, but it is to sit in the depressed place with them so we can explore why they are there. Once its explored, experienced, and understood, only then can we move ourselves to health.
Jim Chalmers, M.A.
Depression is something that can arise at any moment in time due to a certain event in someones life. Someone with depression may feel lost, hopeless or down at times. Depression is treatable and after the clients seek treatment they will experience increased energy, feel more "positive" about life and have relief from emotional suffering. Treatment will help the person find hope and regain control of their life.

(USE MY E-MAIL ADDRESS OF MELINADAYNE@AOL.COM) How one experiences depression varies with each individual. In session, we look closely at how depression has been impacting the individual, and how long it has been around. Seasonal and post-partum depression are also treatable in different ways. Based upon these conversations, strategies are offered to restructure thoughts and feelings, with the help of hypnotherapy (if the client agrees) to profoundly change the path for a more optimisitc life. Depression is not a weakness. Depression is a signal that change is needed. Some simple, yet effective new beginnings are possible.
