The way we think, determines what we feel, influences the decisions we make, and actions we will choose. Many times, we are unaware of our automatic thoughts and we feel trapped, helpless, or hopeless, with a negative view of ourselves, of others and of our future. Talking with someone can help. Talking with a trained, experienced counselor can help even more. I provide an accepting atmosphere, ask questions that elicit self-reflection and self-awareness, and empowerment without need for shame and blame.

Clients who present with depression receive mercy, compassion, and encouragement to move through the process of identifying the roots of sadness, and we will partner to determine what may be a very natural grief process from a chronic medical condition of depression, depressive episode, dysthymia, and other forms of mood disorders in this category. I often network with my client's existing medical team -their Ob/GYN, regular Primary Physician and others with medical training. Many of my clients thought they were depressed when they were really in legitimate grief, trying to deny or stuff the feelings. In an environment of grace and understanding, your emotions will be respected.Hope for joy!

Depression is not a matter of “having a poor attitude” nor is it something that a person can will away. This often misunderstood state is a real biological condition every bit as much as diabetes. Some depressions are situational and can be treated with psychotherapy alone, and some are rooted in the body’s biochemistry and must be treated with medication. My clients are evaluated carefully to determine the best treatment plan for them on a case by case basis, and of course the greatest care is taken to provide you with a safe place to express your sorrows and to be heard with empathy and patience.

There are many different levels of depression. For some it can be just feeling a little down and for others it can be severe in that it affects every area of their lives. It is important if you do struggle with depression that you reach out for help. It has been my experience that if someone is struggling with severe depression it is important to look at coupling therapy with an anti-depressant. From a therapist standpoint it is my goal to be there as a support person and to walk along side an individual as they experience freedom from depression.
