Chronic or long term depressed mood suggests that the person's outlook, attitude, feeling about living, and resiliency has been injured by experiences from which the person is unable to naturally recover on his/her own. Therapy must go into such experiences even though the natural inclination on the part of the client may be to be withdrawn, silent, non-communicative, avoidant, to close up and cover up...The therapist must be good enough, sensitive enough, attuned enough, responsive enough to make talking, revealing, emoting feel worthwhile. Connecting and relating over time lightens depressed mood. Emotional injuries that stay silently inside heal slowly if at all.
