You can feel better! It may not seem like it right now, but their is hope for enjoying life again. When you are depressed it is hard to find the hope, and everything seems like such an effort. That is why you need support to get through this. You don't have to figure it out on your own. Your friends and family may not understand that your depression is more than just being very sad and they might tell you to "snap out of it" or that you need to "just get over it". Sometimes friends and family are too close and too emotionally involved in your pain to give you the help you need. Seeking therapy can be the first step on your road to recovering from depression and rediscovering the joy.

Unlike the blues, depression is a dark place where you lose interest in the things you use to enjoy, like: friends, daily activities, and work. Even getting out of bed may seem like a challenge. A key ingredient for successful therapy is a good, trusting relationship between patient and therapist. Empirically supported treatments like Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, CBT, can be as effective as antidepressants. As an experienced therapist I can help you apply specific skills to change the impact of negative thoughts and depression on your life.

Half of depressed clients bring patterns of avoidance, denial and suppressed anger. Many depressed clients show learned helplessness or have just given up. Helping determine the stage of change the client is presently in and building excellent therapeutic rapport are key to design a therapy to facilitate sustaining growth. Benefits of depression treatment include: clearing of the dark cloud; coming to terms with "what is"; having a more life-affirmative perspective; and be motivated with increased energy to engage in relationships, work and life. To find and transform defeating self-judgments / beliefs and identify and resolve unfinished traumas open up feeling better about oneself and life.

My approach to treating depression is based on the nature, level and depresssion history of a particular client. In addition to providing safety for a person to express themselves freely, we build internal and external resources, e.g. lifestyle and social support, exercise. I also teach mindfulness and sensorimotor skills that interrupt the depressive patterns that take place in mind and body. Gradually changing self defeating relationship patterns can also relieve depression. A majority of my clients find depression decreases significantly with these methods. For some, depressive symptoms may be more entrenched, in which case medication has been used as an additional support.

Simply put, who or what is depressing you? In a safe and secure atmosphere, we begin to understand your troubles and how you think about them. I practice psychydynamic psychotherapy and use cognitive behavioral interventions when appropriate. I frequently will include a client's partner, at least for a few sessions, as an adjunct because I believe that many problems are best solved in an interpersonal context.

Our thoughts, behaviors and our emotions are all strongly connected. Change one of these three and the others have to shift as well. Cognitive-behavioral therapy relies on these connections to give you some control back over your depression. Studies have shown Cognitive-behavioral therapy to be a highly-effective treatment for depression, with or without medication. Different types of depression require different types of treatment. I work with each client to fully understand their unique experience of depression. We can work together to build on existing skills and find new ways to help you manage your mood.

If you haven't experienced depression at some point in your life, you are either a master of denial or have been asleep at the wheel. Depression is the result of the repressed anger we feel towards ourselves that give rise to shame, guilt, and despair. When we experience feelings of rejection, abandonment or exploitation they are often so painful that we cannot tolerate facing them. We become defensive, touchy, irritable. Effective therapy makes it possible for us face ourselves in ways which we have previously avoided or denied. Depression constricts our range of emotion. We go about our lives in half-hearted ways. We lack the ability to fully engage or fully commit. The key is reconnect!

During therapy, we will define the depression, explore its depths and examine treatment modalities. If your style of learning is simply talking, we’ll engage in a trial of reflecting, listening or, perhaps, silence. We may work from a notebooks, textbooks, journals, videos and movies. We’ll think and talk about: regret, loss, fear, self-esteem, “what I’ve done,” “what I’ve haven’t done.” We’ll see if you have thoughts that: others are better educated, more interesting, more clever, socially adept or self-confident. We’ll look at your views on your ability to change, the future, past life experiences and checking in on the “here and now.” Medication is a consideration, if needed.

Depression can come in various forms, and we can be more prone to it if we have a biological/hereditary history of depression in our family. It can also occur if we have changes in our health such as thyroid disease or changes in hormone levels as with pregnancy, or menopause. It is normal at times to feel 'blue' or to be upset after a significant loss in our lives. Prolonged depression can occur if we try to push away feelings that upset us, or blame ourselves for difficulties. Often, those who suffer from depression criticize themselves intensely, and at times don't even realize they are doing it.

Everyone experiences disappointments and discouragements in life. Broken relationships, shattered dreams, loss of jobs, homes, relationship partners, chronic illness or pain they can all lead to depression. The task of a therapist is, first to listen caringly and carefully to assist a client become aware of the cause of depression and to assist in discovering a way to cope life's difficulties in a helpful way. At times this mean, taking a fearless inventory of one's way of looking at and dealing with life situations, becoming realistic about one's actual life situation accompanied by making cognitive and behavioral changes and at times seeking medical help.

Depression can be painful for the person suffering from it as well as those closest to them. When we are depressed, previously enjoyable activities can appear meaningless. We lose interest in connecting with others (often exacerbating symptoms). Furthermore, it can feel as though there is "no point" to life. We all have periods of time when we feel less than ideal, but depression is severe and enduring. Counseling provides an atmosphere where it is safe to discuss these feelings.

If you are reading this, thinking that you might be depressed, you probably are. Even if one is used to it, depression sucks the life energy out of a person, dampening their ability to concentrate, to be creative or have hope for a good future. Depression is different from the blues, which may last just a day or two. Depression can be mild, moderate or severe, but left unchecked, it can become chronic. Please call or email me so I can help you to assess where you are right now in terms of depression, and the feelings that often become mixed with it such as anxiety and frustration. If we determine that therapy might be useful for you, call me and let's find a time to meet.

I work with the individual to establish coping skills to move from a dysphoric mood state to a more positive or hopeful mood state. I explore how changing ones lifestyle can decrease a vulnerability towards depression. I address issues such as self esteem (to what extent does an individual feel entitled to confront negative situations in their life), assertiveness (learning to be a more effective communicator in order to get your needs met), and support systems (giving yourself permission to reach out to individuals who you have nourishing relationships with).

Depression is usually very treatable. As an Oakland depression therapist, I help people with depression work through their pain and take steps to feel better again. I use traditional talk therapy techniques as well as empirically proven therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness based therapy, and EMDR. Exciting new research is proving the effectiveness of combining meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, for depression, and I am excited to offer this therapy to my clients. As a somatic therapist, I am also able to help you work with your body to change the physical symptoms of depression. I help adults & children heal and recover from depressive disorders.

Depression is usually caused from helplessness in the face of overwhelming situations. This can be a learned response from unresolved traumas in your past. My approach to depression is multifaceted, beginning with getting to know you and understanding your life and its hardships. Very quickly, I like to move into using Somatic Experiencing to help resolve past trauma and retrain your nevous system to be able to re-regulate itself in the face of what used to be overwhelming circumstances. I have seen a lot of people rise up out of the hell of depression, with and without medication, to live the lives they were meant to live.

As your therapist, I witness the stuck places and the wonderful places you can go to. I'll help you slow down inside and check those places out more and explore the experience of them. I'll guide you and help you. Most of the times people find that relying on their knowledge of their behaviors alone haven't gotten them very far out of those stuck places. So, together in therapy we'll get under that piece to help you create a change. The sessions I hold are practical, warm, and interactive. I encourage bravery, humor, authenticity, and personal empowerment. I support you exactly where you are, and gently but firmly guide you to where you'd like to be.

When anger is suppressed to an unhealthy degree it often doesn't disappear-it comes out as depression. Handling job losses as well as relational losses can preserve one's self respect and dignity. It's not that we are exempt from depressions or brokeness, it's how we rise up from them. When depressions are common to women going through the menopausal changes and challenges to self esteem, it's important to have someone guide them through the maze of hormonal ups and downs.

Depression is on a continuum. Most of us experience the ups and downs of life. Some people can get stuck in the abyss of depression. Once that happens in a continuous mode, the pattern of depression evolves. And living in the depths of depression rather than in a harmonious life becomes becomes more of the norm. We have fewer frames of reference for harmony and more for despair. My job with you is to help you recognize the events and circumstances that brought you to the abyss and begin to help facilitate your moving towards the light.

Depression can feel as though a deep fog has fallen over your familiar life so that nothing feels clear, it is hard to think and all you want to do is withdraw into an empty room. People may tell you that you can "just snap out of it", not realizing that depression is truly an illness. Extended stress, a sudden crisis or even a genetic tendency for depression will deplete the biochemicals you need in your brain. That is why the best treatment for depression is medication to build up the needed biochemicals and 'talk therapy' to understand what issues in your life were behind this illness. This new understanding of old blocks in your life will allow you to move ahead more freely.

Depression is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience or through depression in a family member. Each year over 17 million American adults experience a period of clinical depression. Depression changes how you think, and how you experience the world. Having a well-intentioned friend or family member tell you to "GET OVER IT" is not going to help. If you are experiencing depression, you may have discovered that medication is not enough. I have learned powerful psychological techniques that have helped many move away from depression and live more satisfying lives. Call me at 925-855-1745 or visit www.4creativeliving.com

Depression can have many different sources: isolation, unresolved loss, unconscious anger turned against the self, feelings of shame, inadequacy and low self-esteem. It is sometimes experienced as a kind of deadness or emptiness, an absence of feeling. Therapy offers you the opportunity to get to the bottom of what is troubling you, to find your way to solutions. By talking through your issues and feelings you know what you need to do to change and you have support for taking the steps to make the change happen. Everyone needs to feel heard and understood, to feel empathy for their suffering, in order to do this. I offer this empathy, support and guidance to you.

Finding the thoughts and experiences that have triggered you into low energy and negative expectations, we look for the blocking emotions that leave you feeling hopeless and helpless and challenge them. We search for the lost meaning and look for the small pleasures and successes that are not being experienced consciously. We look at the unfinished business of the past and come to peace with it and create a realistic future that has hope. By listening to yourself, being patient and accepting, a new sense of self-esteem is created.

Are you feeling down, depressed, having negative thoughts, and feeling stuck, out of energy? Depression affects most people, to some degree, at some point in life. Seeking help is enormously important because the cycle of depression needs to be interrupted. When I work with depression, I focus on the interaction between the thoughts that we tell ourselves, our day-to-day behaviors and our mood. This is called CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and is the treatment of choice for depression. I also use positive, strength/values based interventions from the field of Positive Psychology, which has also been found to be a strong intervention. Break the cycle, reach out.

Depression is physical as well as psychological experience. It may appear with or without direct or immediate triggers..We learn to manage it to prevent it from overwhelming us. By using Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Constructivist Psychotherapy we can pay discover the personal narrative and thought-emotional processes that work to sustain depression. By working to identify and then change the narrative or thought process we begin to gain some control over the mood. We also employ established, effective personal practices to nurture and develop means of countering the mood. We may not be able to erase the past or the mod but we can change our relationship to it.

Depression and chronic worry often go hand in hand and both leave us feeling helpless and alone. I work with people who are locked in cycles of repetitive, negative thinking to see that the wisdom of the body can be harnessed to help change the cycle. You can learn to listen to your body-mind's need for being accepted, encouraged, and loved, rather than harassed, put-down and pushed. Depression is the fear of doing things on the job, in relationship or in life less than perfectly. And yet perfection isn't possible. We can work together to release you from the bonds of skewed thinking. You can practice new skills, especially acceptance of yourself, other people and our human frailties.
