Depression is one of the most widespread emotional problems faced by people in today's society, imposing a significant toll on their personal lives, family lives, and work lives. Many people burdened by depression regard it as a sign of weakness and suffer with it privately and in silence. Through supportive and empathic dialogue I have helped many people achieve significant relief, which then improves the quality of their relationships as well as their own states of mind. In those cases that warrant it, and with the full knowledge and consent of the client, I also provide referrals for psychiatric medication, to be used in conjunction with verbal psychotherapy.
Nancy Gubman, LCSW
Depression can come from external situations, such as relationship or job loss, or internal states, often experienced as chronic depression. I try to first of all help the client stop blaming him- or herself for this state. Then I tend to focus on small shifts in the session. For example, if a client starts out being excited about something and then shifts to a flat affect, I will comment on that and together we will try to understand what happend right before the shift. I believe that paying attention to these small and often subtle shifts, right in the session, can help to alter old patterns.
Susie Greenebaum, MS ED, LCSW
People suffer depression for many reasons. But no matter what, depression can feel paralyzing. You may feel overwhelmed with sadness or numbness. Everything can feel pointless, tiring and just plain bad. Depression can relate to an event in your life or it can feel unexplainable. The trickiest part is that we often blame ourselves for how bad we fell and this just makes it worse. Therapy for depression helps you develop compassion for yourself and out of this compassion, it becomes easier to work toward feeling better. Together we will find which techniques work best to give your relief. I use techniques that help you change your habits and thoughts.
Ryan Swearingen, LMHC
Depression can be an extremely debilitating and lonely experience that leaves an individual feeling hopeless and helpless. The role of therapy is to explore these difficult feelings and gain support to alleviate isolation and feelings of guilt. Recovering from depression is a process and uncovering core beliefs that perpetuate depression can be a liberating.

I help individuals understand how their behavior leads to depression. Rather than automatically suggest medication, I help depressed persons understand how they can live life more effectively, develop realistic goals and expectations, handle the tasks of life and relate to other people more skillfully, stop believing their inner critic and develop better ways to socialize with people. I also help the patient to understand if there are relationships and/or work environments that may be contributing to their depression, in addition to unresolved childhood events.
Caren Shapiro, LMSW, MFA
I work in an interactive and supportive way to help clients explore the feelings and self-defeating thoughts that undermine their happiness. Working together clients are able to bring unconscious thoughts into awareness, where they can be analyzed, explored and understood. I work to decrease self-anger and blame while setting real attainable goals. By talking through and challenging self-defeating beliefs and fears, I help clients loosen the hold of their depressive state. As a relational psychotherapist, I encourage and support clients as they build self-esteem and begin to create more satisfying and fulfilling lives.
Danielle Benvenuto, LCSW
Feeling empty, immobilized and helpless? Feeling that whatever you do you just can't get out of that rut? You may be experiencing depression and you are not alone. Depression comes in many forms and in different intensities. Other common symptoms are low self esteem, eating and sleeping difficulties, poor concentration, anger, sadness, feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of suicide. Depression is the result of a variety factors which therapy will help you to discover and work through so that feeling depressed doesn't have to be such a burden and barrier to leading a fuller and more satisfying life. Give therapy a try. Getting out of depression is easier to handle with help.
Jean Fitzpatrick, L.P.
Sometimes life hurts. Do tears come surprisingly easily these days? Have activities and relationships you've always enjoyed stopped being fun? Do loved ones tell you you're cranky? Have your eating or sleeping patterns changed? If so, you may be depressed. Often the first thing people think of is antidepressant medication. Yet medication is no substitute for talking about your feelings with an experienced, compassionate therapist who will help you find more effective, fulfilling ways of thinking and creating supportive structure in your life. You can feel better! To ask questions you may have about depression or to make an appointment, contact Jean Fitzpatrick.
Colette Dowling, LCSW
I believe in helping people get through the worst part of depression as quckly as possible. This is an illness that takes a great toll on people--on their relationships, their work lives, their families. In fact we know that the longer a particujlar episode of depression goes untreated, the more likely new episodes will occur in the future. There are many forms of treatment, medical and otherwise. I work with an individual to develop a treatment plan that feels comfortable. I will also, when appropriate, work with family members to help them understand what's happening to the depressed loved one, and how best to be of help.
Carolyn AlRoy, Psy.D.
I will determine the severity of depression and the need for medication. We will figure out if depression is a lifestyle, or an acute response to a crisis or situation. We will look at the causes, your experience of depression, what are triggers for depression, and ways to cope with it and give you better control of it. If it is a recurrent depression we will find ways for you to cope, and develop good support networks if you don't have them.

Gestalt therapy is a holistic approach, recognizing you as a whole person and the unity of your body, mind and emotions. As a body-oriented therapy, we can help you locate how you are experiencing and holding depression in your body, and created graded exercises for that will move you out of it. Many of the suggestions and exercises that your therapist will give you can be done between sessions, so that you are not dependent on a one-time-a-week treatment.
Melissa Israel, LCSW-R
Feeling down? Having a hard time coming out of it? Everything feels like a major effort. Tired of hearing you are lazy? I understand, in therapy I can help you identify why you are feeling this way. Encouraging and supporting you to recognize maladapative ways in which you behave while developing healthier, more effective coping strategies. Clients benefit from my eclectic style, by looking into their childhoods, examining when they may have felt this depression before. And why again now? Life is hard, bad things happen, let me help you find a way out from under this dark cloud.
Alan Lehman, Ph.D., LCSW
Through an active approach that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques and psychodynamic interventions, I can help alleviate all but the most severe symptoms of depression, which often require medication as an adjunct to therapy.
Cognitively, we will work actively at changing the way you think, in turn changing the way you feel. Then, I will assist you in confronting and actively changing those things about yourself or your situation that depress you.
Ultimately, we will undo those self-defeating behavior patterns that keep you stuck, boosting your confidence and assertiveness, and empowering you with tools and techniques for keeping depression at bay going forward.
Henry A Malone, Ph.D.
Depression is a state that most people experience to various degrees during their lifetime. The disappointments we experience in life can be traumatic and extremely painful, bringing us to a place where it is very difficult to function, to feel good about ourselves, to concentrate, to sleep and to feel hopeless about the future. The pain of this state can become overwhelming to the point of giving up. You are special and of great value even though you may not feel so at this moment, so do come to a warm, caring and accepting therapeutic environment with Dr. Malone who has many years experience helping individuals work through depression to reach acceptance and love of themselves.
Nikki DiFranks, PhD, MA, MS, LCSW-R
In my biography on Theravive, I describe how I utilize an integrated combination of cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic modalities. That is, I tailor each treatment plan to the needs of the individual. Some patients wish to make connections between past experiences and current depression, and in this case it is appropriate to revisit the past to recognize its psychodynamic influence on current maladaptive behaviors. Other patients take a purely cognitive behavioral position on their experienced depression, wanting to be grounded in the present and move forward with problem-solving techniques and strategies. I also work with two psychiatrists who may prescribe medication where needed.
Howard Rossen, LCSW
Sometimes we simply feel stuck in neutral. We can't move into drive and if we don't hold on tightly we so easily can fall back into reverse. Depression takes many forms and sometimes we don't even know that we are engulfed by it. But if you feel that you are so very alone and that no one can understand what you are going through perhaps talking to a Psychotherapist might be a good place to start. Try taking that first step because everyone needs someone to talk to.
Paul Josephson, LCSW
Many of my clients report significant improvement in their relationships with loved ones and coworkers as well as advancing in their careers when we have worked together to lift chronic or short term depression, whether it be serious or mild. I utilize a dynamic and interactive approach to dealing with depression focusing on my client's strengths and goals.
Daniel Minuchin, MA, LMFT
Depression is one of the most common issues that brings people into therapy. Sometimes a chronic sense of discomfort and sadness. At other times it can be acute and feel overwhelming. While resolving chronic depression can be a gradual process, at times, gaining some relief from severe depression can be a quicker process than people expect. Cognitive techniques which look at the thinking which underlies depression can be helpful. Family therapy, and working with couples together can help. Hypnotic work is also useful. Just having an attentive and caring listener on an ongoing basis can help people to deal with their depression and begin to feel better.
Phyllis Y. Sachs-Yasgur, LCSW-R, CLL
Depression is frequently defined as anger towards oneself. We will work together to help build your self-esteem and resolve previous traumatic life events. We will use some traditional modalities along with relaxation techniques and physical, endorphin- releasing therapy to help you move towards a happier existence. Depending upon the individual circumstances, Phyllis provides treatment either on a one-to-one basis or on a family basis to children, teens, and adults of all ages.

The impact of Depression on the lives of those who suffer from it is far reaching. At it’s best, it feels as if a dark cloud is somehow constantly hovering above. At its worst, it is completely debilitating. Making simple tasks, such as getting out of bed or brushing your teeth, feel insurmountable. While medication is often helpful, it is just one step of the healing process. When you have lived under such circumstances, there is much to learn about yourself, your ability to manage troubling or stressful situations, and how you act and react in the world.

There is hope if you are unable to enjoy the things that used to give you pleasure or if you have a sense of sadnesss or hopelessness that just won't go away. We all feel sad from time to time, but depression is when this goes on over time and can affect all areas of your life and even lead to you feeling like giving up on life. Together, we can look at what is going on and explore ways (through discussion, actions and possibly involving a physician) to help you back to where you would want to be - where you can experience a sense of wholeness and peace. Christopher can help you on that journey.

Chronic depression can leave one feeling completely hopeless about life. It also depletes the little bit of energy you have, making getting out of bed in the morning a chore. You might find yourself sleeping too much, yet feeling exhausted all the time. When I work with people who exhibit these symptoms, the initial psychotherapy steps include helping the person set goals and begin working toward them while the therapy unfolds and sources of the depression get examined in new ways.
John Kukor, Ed.D.
My goal with clients who suffer from depression is to get you up and going again so you can enjoy your life more, and experience greater meaning and satisfaction. Depression can make a person feel exhausted and gloomy, and it tends to make people think things will never get better. But depression is one of the most treatable emotional disorders. I am committed to supporting my depressed patients to become "formerly depressed," and to have some energy again, to have something to look forward to, to feel like life is meaningful again.
Loren Gelberg-Goff, LCSW, CHt
Depression is anger that we turn against ourselves. By viewing your depression as something that you can change, cope with and understand, you can live your life more authentically empowered. Depression triggers feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, and this leads to feeling like a victim, which only serves to increase feelings of depression. You will learn to connect to your own internal feelings of empowerment, self-esteem and self-respect. You will be able to embrace a new perspective of who you are and learn how to cope with your more challenging feelings with love, respect and compassion. You can learn to live knowing 'who you are is enough' and being 'well within'.
Michael Bednarski, PhD
There are many understandable causes for depression and every person's experience with depression is unique. Learning the root causes of your depression will help us to tailor individualized approaches to helping you both manage and beat depression. Many patients treated for depression using my approach see improvement within a few months of treatment. Some see results within weeks.
James Brace, LCSW-R, CEET, EMT
I have a holistic approach when addressing depression and anxiety. I look at all areas of a person's life in order to understand areas that need improvement to support health such as family and friends, medical and physical aspects as well as spiritual. Adjusting all systems helps provide a quality base in order to obtain health. Cognitive techniques help provide concrete tools to pull through difficult daily resistance.
Staci Rosenberg, LMSW, CEC
I have worked with individuals, families, couples, LGBT, for over 12 years in a multitude of areas. My mission is for everyone to have an outlet to be heard, gain introspection, and set goals to create their optimal long term happiness and live the life they deserve and desire in a safe and comfortable environment. I help people get to where they want to be. I have people do homework assignments (not time consuming but introspective) to help them to move forward and begin to enjoy and uncover things they enjoy doing.
Anat Ben-Zvi, Ph.D.
I see depression as an opportunity for a person to go inwards to discover new meaning, new passions, and release old feelings and haunts. I attempt to help people tolerate the darkness and discomfort that comes with the depression and to confront what the depression is forcing them to see. Often with depression, a person has come to internalize negative beliefs about Self, the World, or Other people. Therapy allows a person to reevaluate some of these beliefs and to adopt new ones. Out of these beliefs new feelings, and new actions may emerge that lead the person to a better life.
Marge Blaine, Ph.D., LP
Depression is among the most paralyzing of life events . Many receive only medication for help with this common human problem, but study after study has shown that counseling/psychotherapy is a vital part of any recovery plan. In coming for counseling, one can expect to gain understanding of the roots of one’s depression, and learn valuable tools and resources to remain on a more vital level in one’s emotional life.
William Jacobowitz, EdD
Everyone struggles with depression at some point in their lives, often many times throughout our lives. Often it is short-lived. When it is not, psychotherapy is frequently beneficial to help overcome the symptoms that can be disruptive in our lives. Through a supportive approach, I will assist you to gain insight into the issues contributing to the depression, and assist you in a strategy to improve the quality of your life.

Depression is anger turned inward or against yourself. As anger builds within, an individual has three choices: To channel the anger energy assertively by expressing the feelings attached to the situations causing one to feel depressed; to express the anger through outbursts that can be very destructive to the self and others; to internalize the anger and become more depressed and less functional with time. My job is to enable you to learn how to identify and express feelings that are causing you to feel depressed. The next step is to change behaviors associated with your feelings freeing you from depressive thoughts and feelings.
Marc Tallent, PhD
There is no better treatment for depression than talk therapy. This may sound surprising, but have you ever met anyone who stopped taking antidepressants because his or her depression was cured? Several recent studies have proved what many psychologists have long known: Antidepressant medications have very little or no effect. (See “The Depressing News About Antidepressants,” Newsweek, January 29, 2010: http://www.newsweek.com/2010/01/28/the-depressing-news-about-antidepressants.html). --- I will work with you to uncover the root causes of your depression, learn new responses to life’s challenges, free you up to have a broader range of feelings, and experience more pleasure in life.

While there are many treatments for depression, not everyone can talk about their deeper experiences with words. In addition to many psychotherapy methods that rely on talking, I utilize non-verbal ones as well. I am also creative in finding ways to help clients forgive, release long-held shame and rage, and accept themselves, flaws and all. When words do not express what clients need to say, crayons, clay, music and other techniques may help.

My approach to undoing depression is by increasing your ability to listen to your voice within. I incorporate psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy, and creative arts therapy. We are often unaware of the ways that we stifle ourselves from listening to our inner voice that is always speaking to us about our needs, disappointments, desires, and dreams. Psychotherapy can help you to undo old patterns of relating to others that are based on old wounds from the past that no longer work for you. By working through those wounds you are more available to live in the present moment, and hear your inner voice.
Hal Brickman, MSW, CSW, LCSW, C.HT
Hal help clients understand depression and better cope with the nasty and persistent erosion of hope. Hal encourages his clients to understand the reason(s) for their depression and things they can do to climb out of it. Hal also encourages these clients to connect to, express, even write about their depression. His belief is that by facing it head on his clients are slowly disarming the depression, while arming themselves with realization that by trying to live more fully they are building up ego-mastery. This inevitably increases self-confidence. The sense that I can make an impact on my life. The ascension to that new faith in oneself greatly increases hope and personal power.

Depression is often a complex condition. It may require multiple forms of healing that include psychotherapy, nutritional support, physical exercise, interactive and recreational activities, and medication at times. Working with one's history of depression, understanding family and other relational components, and times without depression help to identify important signposts in a person's life and some best courses of action(s). Understanding ones own depression is an excellent first step, planning for change is the next step (one's daily activities and goals), and monitoring when depression is more or less active helps. There's hope if you suffer from depression, hope and change.
