My work with depression consists largely on quick relieving of the depressive symptoms (i.e., intense sadness, lack of energy) and then, if the individual has a history of repeated depressions, an in-depth exploration to help the individual understand how she/he developed the depression and why it continues to occur. This self-knowledge is essential in arming the individual so they can reduce recurrences of the depressive symptoms (at least at their usual intensity), and to some extent in shifting their personality patterns away from the self-criticism and despair associated with depression.

Depression will affect 1 in 10 people during their lifetime. Some depression is life circumstance related and some can be chronic and long lasting. Cognitive Therapy is very successful in treating depression. Being well versed in this therapy, I can teach people to use the tools to mitigate symptoms of depression and watch for early warning signs of a re-occurring type of depression.

When working with clients experiencing depression, I use a combination of behavioral activation therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. I work collaboratively with my clients and in the first session we establish achievable goals to work towards. My clients learn evidenced-based skills, strategies, and techniques on how to improve their mood, thought process, and behaviors.

Depression is the unhealthy cousin of sadness. You can be okay when you're sad; when you're depressed, you're not okay. When I work with people experiencing depression, sometimes I help them to move themselves from sadness to depression. Sometimes it isn't realistic to think that you'll be happy; it is realistic to think that you can be okay. Come in and let's have a talk and we'll see if we can figure out how to make you okay again.
