In working with depression I start by exploring one's range of emotion, and work over time to exploring that which is meaningful and important to someone. I use a lot of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps us to see that even though we are going through a very difficult time, we are living our lives according to what is imporant to us. I also use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in correlation to being 'aware of the body', as a means of changing emotion and thoughts through physical symptoms and behaviour. Above all I listen to my client as they are the best judge of what is and is not working for them.

When experiencing depression it is hard to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. Lightness can not exist with out darkness. By working together you can start to see the underlying issue or need is that is not being met, moving through the darkness and getting clarity around what it is trying to tell you. The bigger the breakdown the bigger the breakthrough.

Depression robs us of so much in our lives; decision-making suffers, we lose the ability to motivate ourselves, we are generally sad, blue and quite often hopeless. There are numerous anti-depressant medications out there that work well, but quite often people don't want that route. Counseling can help, either on its own or in conjunction with medications. I use a mix of therapies and techniques to best suit the individual client. Cognitive Behavioral therapy is the traditional treatment for depression but there are some newer therapies showing some good results; mindfulness is one that helps treat the whole person, positivity psychology is showing that positivity can help change moods.

Many of us make our problems out to be much bigger than they are; fortunately, a counseling technique called externalizing the problem can help. Externalizing the problem helps us gain a better perspective: rather than personalizing it, clients in therapy are able to separate themselves from the problem at hand. Therapists employ this technique by personifying their client’s problem: for instance, they will refer to the problem as “it” and “the”. A lot of our problems are rooted in negative thought patterns, of which we can also identify and reframe; common examples include mind reading and labeling. It’s important that we all understand and acknowledge our negative thoughts and put in the work to replace them with more positive thoughts—a counselor or therapist can help.
