Michelle Kelley, LCSW

Licensed Counselor

92 Main St., Suite 202 #2, Warrenton, Virginia 20186

Are you or a loved one struggling with a possible eating disorder? The types of eating disorders which I see the most include bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricting calories, excessive exercising, and night eating syndrome. Women and teens are the most susceptible. Girls/women often struggle with body image and the "ideal body type". There is a tremendous amount of pressure to look a certain way. I get it. Please reach out to me if you are not sure about the diagnosis. I can help with that too.

Marianne Clyde, LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

20 Ashby Street, Suite 105, Warrenton, Virginia 20186

Contrary to popular belief, eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and compulsive over eating are really not about food or"self control" or lack of it. There are a complex mixture of causes, each case being unique. Often times it is helpful to work in conjunction with a medical doctor and a nutritionist, while I help the client uncover the beliefs that lead to the addictive behaviors. Once we find the cause and the beliefs that hold the behaviors in place, we can change them, ultimately changing the damaging patterns.

Food is a wonderful thing, but when there are parts of us that are not doing well emotionally we can end up with a unhealthy relationship with food as a way of coping. The good news is that we can change that if we work through the underlying struggles. This is something we can't do alone--the way our brains work we need the help of another person. Managing an eating disorder can be long-term challenge. These disorders often coexist with anxiety, depression, or substance abuse. In many cases, symptoms can become life threatening. Counseling is the most important aspect in the treatment of these disorders. I am a proponent of a comprehensive approach that also emphasizes medical monitoring and nutrition. My treatment plans help determine your needs, and establish goals and guidelines. I emphasize: normalizing eating patterns, learning skills to improve mood and eating habits, developing ways to transform negative thoughts and behaviors, adopting relationship and stress coping skills, and developing mindfulness and a healthy life-style. Identifying an eating disorder is often very complicated and challenging. Individuals who suffer from an eating disorder may be unwilling to accept the truth about the harmful nature of their actions.Eating disorders are characterized by a preoccupation with weight, body image, and /or food, but the reasons why an eating disorder develops are much more widely varied. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat eating disorders. This is a proven effective approach to working with this very complex issue.
