Disordered eating patterns have become an increasingly common struggle in the United States and around the world. Many times people start to focus excessively on eating, body and weight as a means of coping with feelings and experiences that would otherwise feel overwhelming. I have specialized training in helping people along the whole spectrum of eating issues, ranging from people with diagnosable condtions such as anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating to people who fear their relationship with food, dieting and/or how their body looks may be interfering with their enjoyment of life and relationships.

Eating disorders are often a function of control--where a child, feeling helpless to control important aspects of her life, will seek to control her body--the one area where she actually can exercise control. And our culture, which intolerably honors unhealthy skinniness, contributes to this problem. With eating disorders the strategy that I find most useful is to put the client in charge of what they eat but the parents in charge of how much they eat. One must also seek to understand issues of control and self image. This is a fraught field outside my own area of expertise.

Whether working with individuals struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or general eating issues, we strive to help clients better understand the role that food, exercise, and body image play in their lives and to help them change behavior and thinking patterns that are creating suffering and pain. Because eating disorders often begin as a response to coping with distressing or uncomfortable feelings, we work with individuals to create new, healthier coping strategies. Additionally, the therapy process creates opportunities to gain insight regarding how food and exercise function adaptively and maladaptively in clients’ lives. This is done in a safe and supportive environment w....

I specialize in treating eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, chronic dieters, compulsive overeaters, and disordered eaters. I am currently nearing the end of the process to become certified as an eating disorder specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). I have worked in both inpatient and residential settings. I use elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as well. I also work hard to address issues surrounding body image, self-esteem and self-worth with my clients, as these go hand in hand with ED recovery.

Dialectic Behavior Therapy is the primary approach used in treating those who restrict or binge. This addictive cycle can be overcome if client's are willing to complete homework assignments and work with their treatment team. Body image issues have become more common in the American culture due to the unrealistic portrayal of women in the media. It is my goal to increase women's awareness of the negative messages that are received on a daily basis and help them to listen to their body as if it were their best friend.

Eating disorders are so much more then problems with weigh gain or loss. I want you to understand that together we can work to find the core problem. This process is often lengthy and difficult - yet - it always provides you with fulfillment. You will be able to regain control of your life - manage what you want and what you do not want - reclaim relationships that may have been lost or hidden - and most important live the life that "you" not anyone else "simply you" desire.
