Eating disorders are often a function of control--where a child, feeling helpless to control important aspects of her life, will seek to control her body--the one area where she actually can exercise control. And our culture, which intolerably honors unhealthy skinniness, contributes to this problem. With eating disorders the strategy that I find most useful is to put the client in charge of what they eat but the parents in charge of how much they eat. One must also seek to understand issues of control and self image. This is a fraught field outside my own area of expertise.

In therapy, we can work together to improve how you feel about your body and help you see how competent and capable you are in many aspects of your life. We can work to reduce your fears about food and your struggles with perfectionism.
