My approach to someone with an eating disorder— whether Anorexia , Bulimia or other unspecified eating disorders—is to focus on core issues like dependence on parents, difficulties in problem solving and the needs for control. This is done by developing a trusting relationship, and reducing anxiety and shame. The use of food as an emotional comfort to cover up emotional pain is a powerful motive. Letting go of the control eating has come to over in one’s life is not an easy task, however moving beyond the eating disorder can free one to explore new life challenges and opportunities.
