I believe that eating disorders do not exist independently; I strongly believe that there are other issues such as depression and/or low self esteem, with the eating disorder being the only area where the individual feels a sense of control. My approach would be to assist the individual in working through the other stressors, decreasing the need for control through eating disorders. I would encourage medical care as needed. I

In my work with clients who have eating disorders, it is important to look at the reasons behind the eating disorder behaviors. Often times, inaccurate views of body image, trauma, and/or lack of control underly a client's eating disorder. I will work with that client to identify they "why's" behind anorexia, bulimia, binging behaviors, etc. Once a client can recognize these triggers, a treatment plan will be formulated between therapist and client to ensure that attainable goals are set out in order to instill healthier sef-image, relief from anxiety, and decreased cognitive distortions.

Eating disorders can quickly become chronic and debilitating; therefore, seeking professional help and early invention is important. I tailor treatment to meet the individual’s needs and utilize their strengths. I work to help clients live a happy, healthy life and get back to things they used to enjoy instead of being consumed by thoughts of food and weight.

Eating Disorders cross the span of gender, culture and socio-economic class. Whether you struggle with anorexia, bulmia, over exercising or body image distortions, I can help facilitate a more peaceful way to live. ED have many different sources but often stem from a lack of self-esteem, perfectionism or as a means to self-soothe. Studies show that cognitive behavorial therapy combined with insight oriented therapy often offer the most satisfying means to overcome an Eating Disorder. I use both approaches, I also work closely with several residential programs, when there is a need for more comprehensive care. Anorexia is Greek for "without appetite" and Bulimia is Greek for "ravenous hunger." They are behaviors characterized by under eating and overeating. If you under eat to the point of risking your life, you are called Anorexic. If you overeat and compensate (by excessive exercise or purging) you are called Bulimic. If you overeat and do nothing to compensate, you become overweight. If you are overweight to the point of damaging your body, you are called obese. All of these behaviors are serious problems. Whether they are rooted in genetics, family history, or current emotional stresses, you need to change what you are doing with food. Please get some help today. The world is a better place with you than without you.

I have had great success assisting clients who are struggling with eating issues (anorexia, bulemia, emotional overeating) over the past 5 years. I have found that eating issues are frequently a symptom of anxiety and poor self-esteem. When one feels frustrated that one cannot control the world around them, a certain amount of comfort is found in knowing that one can control what one eats or that eating can alter one's mood. Therefore, when working with clients who have eating disorders, I also address underlying symptoms of anxiety and low self-worth so that the individual in not only healthier, but happy with themselves and their place in the world.

It seems from those I have treated that suffer from and eating disorder, there are some common underlying difficulties at play. One is an extremely poor self esteem and a desperate need for approval from others to compensate for that. There also seems to be a need to "escape" or "avoid" feelings in general and a way to do this is to hyper-focus on weight, calories and appearance. This gives the person a sense of control in a very unpredictable and tumultuous world. When the client can begin to embrace emotions as a fleeting and normal part of life, they can begin to accept themselves for who they are and stop seeking impossible perfection in order to be content and happy.
