If you feel out of control with food, find yourself obsessing over food and weight, have struggled with dieting for many years, and feel that food has taken over your life, we can help! Disordered eating can take many forms, but ultimately it is destructive both physically and emotionally. Therapy may involve working collaboratively with medical doctors, nutritionists and even group or family therapy to heal and recover from disordered eating behaviors and emotional pain. In addition to therapy, our practice offers a group program to help you make peace with food, recognize and replace emotional eating behaviors and learn to eat intuitively.

Eating Disorders

Joan Lipuscek, MS, LMFTA

Child and Family Therapist

2990 Richmond Ave #209, Houston, TX 77098

With eating disorders, I begin therapy by bringing the client and family in for a family session. I will also see the client alone in order to assess specific behaviors and attitudes about food, weight and exercise. This is very helpful in addressing the severity of the eating disorder and improving the understanding of the contributing factors to the disorder. An eating disorder may sometimes be rooted in low self-esteem, societal pressure, anxiety or misguided ideals of perfection.

If you are struggling with an eating disorder or compulsive overeating, an eating disorder specialist can help you break free from those behaviors that often feel compulsive. I am an eating disorder specialist with over 7 years in the field. When we meet, I will help you identify the reasons why you use food to get your needs met. Then I will teach you tools that can help you get to a place where you are free from the compulsions. You are able to look at food for what it is, food. If you struggle with body image issues, we will work on those on those negative thoughts of your body that cause you beat up on yourself. Eating Disorders

Kevin Fleming Ph.D.

Coach/Change Agent/Consultant

While most eating disorder issues are treated by cognitive behavioral methodologies or specialized outpatient/inpatient programs, Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, PhD provide relief first and foremost for the brain of one suffering from an eating disorder----without giving them medication. We believe that the neural circuitries responsible for the compulsive behaviors with eating are not necessarily only a neurotransmitter issue but of overused neural networks that affect the harmonization, balance, and decisions of the whole brain. When life seems out of our control, one of the ways we adapt to it is to take control over a small portion of our lives. This can unfortunately end up being destructive when that small portion has to do with our eating and body image. While it feels really great to be able to accomplish something like losing weight, there comes a time for some people when they have to admit they have an eating disorder. When this happens, it is very important to get help, because this is a potentially life threatening disorder. Don't put it off, get help right away.

Eating Disorders

David S. Wachtel, Ph. D.

Licensed Psychologist

5252 Westchester St., Suite 105, Houston, TX 77005

I have evaluated and treated anorexia, bulimia, bulimarexia, and compulsive overeating for over 30 years. Of course there are unique, often life-threatening behaviors that are manifested in each of these. At the same time, they share in common pervasive patterns of avoiding the emotional pain and feelings of powerless over their lives except through feeling or trying to feel control over the one area--your body! I actively address the underlying traumatic experiences that contributed to your poor self-esteem and self-image, expectations of rejection and failure, and intense sadness, fear and anger that drive how you treat yourself and your body.

Debbie Grammas, Ph.D.

Licensed Psychologist

Eating disorders and body image concerns are one of my areas of specialty. My dissertation was on male body image dissatisfaction, I have taught several workshops on the issue, conducted therapy with individuals and groups on the topic and will be teaching a class on Body Image at the University of St. Thomas in the fall. When working with clients with these types of issues, we will explore the ways in which disordered eating impacts their life and relationships, behaviors that maintain the disorder, ways to change these behaviors, and ways to cope with the emotional turmoil that occurs. Ways to understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors will also be explored.
