My work with eating disorders is based on non-dieting, non-restricting, client-centered and Feminist philosophy. I believe eating disorders are influenced by many factors, including our ability to establish meaningful relationships with ourselves and others. Food restriction, dieting and/or over exercising is not a way to solve any problems, including problems with food and/or weight. Re-establishing relationship with ourselves and establishing meaningful connections with others is.

Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating are most often developed in order to gain a sense of control over which those things we feel we have no control and are most often rooted in trauma or traumatic experiences. My role in psychotherapy is to help you identify event or events that created a sense of loss of control at some point in your life. Through emotion identification and regulation, positive coping skills are developed that create healthy response to stress and triggers to trauma. Working with a nutritionist and family physician (or specialist) a treatment plan for health, growth, and acceptance would be developed to help you move forward in your life.
