Eating disorders affect all aspects of an individual’s life: emotional, cultural, physiological, and spiritual. Eating disorders are a very serious matter and they be can life threatening. Healing is rarely easy, but there is hope for individuals struggling with eating disorders to lead healthy, functional, and fulfilling lives. Families are deeply affected, and I often do a combination of individual and family sessions. Together we explore inner belief systems, the critical voice, family history and patterns, strengths, supports, and resources. With support and care people can recover from eating disorders. ???

Every person is unique and I help clients to find answers that are right for them. Sometimes, just bringing one's awareness into the body, saying "hello" inside, can be new, profound, and liberating experience. Listening within the body carefully and respectfully, we work to develop a new relationship within the self. Working from this bodily felt sense, there is a physiological shift that allows change and movement out of unhealthy or stuck places.

We are bombarded in our daily life by images of the "perfect body" or "perfect look", without awareness how often these may be unattainable, computer generated images. We minimize our value as human beings, already perfect just as we are. Eating disorders and body image issues range on a continuum from mild to life threatening and impact body, mind and spirit; as well as our relationships with self and others. Clients I have worked with often report feeling misunderstood by loved ones and carry immense feelings of shame. I work with you from a holistic philosophy, using client-centred treatment modalities that focus on the underlying causes and get to the root of the issue. There is hope!

I offer a warm and safe environment to explore the challenges of living with an eating disorder. We live in a world where we are encouraged to be consumed by our appearance while neglecting finding value in our true self. Counselling can facilitate empowerment and change by challenging negative thinking and life approaches which can create and maintain an eating disorder. Creating a new relationship with your body and food in your life is possible and I am willing to walk that journey with you.

Recovery from disordered eating is possible, but not easy. Paradoxically, when we try to control food and eating, we often feel out of control, which can lead to binge eating, starving and obsessing about food. The more we try to control, the less control we have. Change happens when we learn to listen to our bodies, eat balanced foods, and challenge unhealthy beliefs. When we trust and listen to our bodies, we naturally want to exercise, we want to eat healthy and we don't worry or even think of dieting. This is not a short term solution, but with commitment, the results can be amazing.

Like most symptoms, the behaviour is driven by a feeling of self loathing. So the answer is to look at the mistaken belief created by the child that there is something very wrong with who they are. When shown the truth of who they are and they learn to love themselves, the behavior is no longer necessary. Learning to love yourself is a process of undoing the identity that was made up by the child.

It is my hope that individual therapy will benefit clients who may currently be participating in community-based support groups and group therapy, giving them the opportunity to explore in more depth the underlying issues related to their challenges with food. Clients will benefit from exploring relationship issues with significant people in their lives. They will learn to identify inner and situational triggers that may have resulted in harmful patterns and choices in the past. They will benefit from identifying negative and debilitating thought patterns, and will develop self-affirming beliefs to move them to greater confidence and self-acceptance.

Emotional Eating is a symptom of uncomfortable pressure that builds up inside of you. When you feel these uncomfortable feelings you may distract yourself with food and momentarily you feel better. You may notice that soon after, that uncomfortable feeling returns and it becomes a cycle of feeling bad and distracting yourself with food. This turns into an unhealthy cycle that often leaves you feeling frustrated and depressed. Food is the symptom not the reason. Together we can resolve the root cause of these uncomfortable feelings so you can have a healthy comfortable relationship with food and feel better about yourself.

For those struggling with binge-eating, food addiction, or yo-yo dieting, I would love to help. The fundamental principle that we must accept before addressing disordered eating is that it is almost never about the food, it's about the act of eating and what need it is fulfilling within ourselves. Let's work together to discover why your relationship with food has become unhealthy and come up with some ideas of how we can change it. You shouldn't have to be afraid of your refrigerator.
