Clients come to see me for psychotherapy in my practice in downtown Toronto. I work with women and men who are experiencing difficulties with eating-related disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and over-eating. Sometimes there are associated conflicts within the family, as well as interpersonal problems including depression, anxiety-related problems, and difficulties coping with early traumas.
Amelia Perri, RN, BScN, MC
Eating disorders are a complex mental health problem with many contributing factors. My approach focuses on understanding the context of the eating disorder development with each individual client, learning about triggers for related behaviours, and exploring and healing underlying issues. Clients will learn to cope without the eating disorder and will be able to minimize or eliminate unhealthy behaviours. In addition, clients will rediscover who they are away from the eating problem. Many clients have described feeling free or like they have "been lifted out of the fog" as they recover and are able to enjoy their life without the eating disorder thoughts and behaviours interfering.

The traumas from one's life that motivate using food or the control of food as a way to manage life, anxiety, worry and more are effectively neutralized with the holistic psychotherapy model.
Traditional talk therapy: Giving space for the client to explore and express feelings, own awareness’s, transform thoughts, grieve, vent, and neutralize guilt, anger and fear. New understandings and thus new neural pathways begin to form.
Also Somatic focusing: A profound process of accessing the deep subconscious through breathe work and closed eyed dialoguing with the body, the mind and spirit.

Eating Disorders are examples of behaviours that need to be eliminated for most clients to feel that therapy has been successful. I often use experiential treatment, such as Gestalt empty chair techniques to have the client concretize and seperate ED from their executive self. I use many structured exercises in a custom made fashion to have the client grow in their ability, confidence and strength of their executive function. ED is a metaphor for often unconscious or subconscious material that for varied reasons is not directly resolved by the client prior to therapy.

There are many different kinds of eating disorders and I have worked with them all in my 15 years of practice in Toronto. Eating disorders are a form of anxiety response, for which Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is highly effective. Many studies have performed using this modality with results over 90%.
As well, EFT has proven to be fast and effective for urges 'in the moment' when thoughts go out the window and all you have is the overwhelming need to act, either to binge or purge or whatever the disorder may be.
Nancy Christie, M.T.C., B.F.A.,C.Y.W.
The thoughts of anorexia and bulimia are that you'll never be happy until you lose weight because your worth is measured by how you look. Over eaters hide feelings through over eating without knowing how to change, I think that it is important for you to be able to love yourself for who you really are. Part of this is learning that the eating disorder thoughts belong to the disorder. By learning smart self help strategies and forming new healthy habits you can learn to listen to your body and your feelings. In this way you can come home to yourself.
Iris Benrubi, M.A.

I have been researching and working in this area for many years, and am myself a survivor. I take a personal, direct, movitationally-enhancing approach. Most of my clients know incredible amounts about their issue, and can be uncomfortable with an "expert" type person trying to tell them things they already know. I instead take a professional but personable approach, drawing from research and life experience in getting well. The focus in the underlying emotional process, healing it. Learning effective ways of coping to replace the unhealthy one. My approach also combines cognitive behavioural methods, but in the most collaborative and respectful manner. It works.
Lesli Musicar, M.Ed., Counselling Psychology
If you are struggling with your relationship with food, you are acting out an internal drama that likely has nothing to do with food. It may reflect your feelings about your body. But chances are, it is far more complex than that. I will help you get to the bottom of it. I will stand by your side and help you face the painful emotional injuries you have been using food to mask. With these cleared out, you will be able to reclaim your body as your friend. With my support, you will be able to normalize your relationship with food. And ultimately, your body will once again become a home where your spirit can safely settle.

I utilize a relational approach coupled with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to work with clients in understanding the reasons for the Eating Disorder. A life narrative is created to understand where and which core beliefs/schemas were formed, and how these are impacting on present experiences and relationships with a lens to linking to the Eating Disorder.

Abnormal eating habits are not well-understood. Treatments are not scarce and some generate promising outcomes. It is widely accepted that human emotions play crucial roles in eating disorders. Biological, psychological, and social issues and processes are the common focuses of clinical interventions. Our Therapist works with the client to establish healthy eating, positive self image, active lifestyle, and self compassion. Eating disorders often concur with other mental health issues and need to be treated simultaneously.
Carrie Fleetwood, M.Ed., MFT
I have been working with eating disordered clients since working in a college setting over 30 yrs ago and I am still using a two-track approach: helping an individual change their behaviour and life-style on the one hand, and then walking with them through many of the underlying emotional and spiritual issues that drive the eating disorder on the other. Compulsive eating, anorexia and bulimia have a tight grip on so many women (and some men) but if you are one of them, I want to assure you that your future is not hopeless. I would be glad to help you get free from this. Call me today with any questions you may have regarding my experience and approach.
Robin Long, C.A., M.Ed.
Dieting is based on a negative feedback system that is fuelled by destructive and self-deprecating thoughts about the self. To "succeed" at dieting, we often have to succeed at ignoring ourselves. Thus, even our successes become too difficult to endure and the price paid, far too great. We can come to understand how the dieting process separated us from our appetites and renders us dependent on the very dieting rules that we find impossible to follow. Through self-acceptance we can alter our path. We can create a much more positive and synergistic journey that allows us to be, feel and ultimately rely on ourselves over any external set of rules or guidelines.
Jothi Ramesh, M.S.W (equiv), R.S.W
Eating disorders afflict millions of people. For people suffering from an eating disorder, weight is the main focus. By putting a lot of emphasis on food and using food to comfort themeselves, they are able to block or numb difficult/painful feelings and emotions. In my work, I try to help client develop other soothing techniques, bring more awreness to their pattern of avoidance towards painful feelings and learn ways to cope effectively with their feelings
